Why Spanish?

So why did I choose Spanish as the language to learn? You would think the answer would be,

Well, Duh! You live in New Mexico. Of course it would be Spanish.

Except when I would occasionally be tempted to study a language, French was at the top of the list. Andy and I lived in France for thirteen months in 1964-1965. And even now when I’m doing the Spanish exercises the French word often pops into my mind before the Spanish one.

And German would have been my second choice. I spent six months in Germany in 1960, and in the 1980s when I went back to work when Kaitlin was in high school, we were collaborating with a German group on computer programs and would make periodic trips over there. My German wasn’t very fluent, so the weekend to Garmisch-Partenkirchen I’ve written about (Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Day 1 and Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Day 2) was somewhat scary at first. At the time almost no one there spoke English and I had to trust that I could handle it. It turned out fine and the trip was one of the highlights of my life.

Okay, so why the change? Why Spanish? Because I watched a crazy Netflix TV series from Columbia, Newly Rich, Newly Poor. I still laugh when I think of it, and I loved listening to them speak…the series was in Spanish with English subtitles. They spoke so fast I’m sure I could never know Spanish well enough to understand them, but it was exciting when occasionally I would hear a word I understood. Anyway, Spanish comes first now.

Have you ever changed your mind for a crazy reason?

  1. I can’t type for laughing over the question have I ever changed my mind for a crazy reason? it would be easier for me to tell you when I did NOT change my mind for a crazy reason. I think you made a great choice, and when you are done with Spanish you can always do French and German. That is what blog friend in Sweden does, and now she is fluent in 3 and pretty good in 3 others, enought to commicate if needed.

  2. Interesting!
I’m normally resolute in big things that matter — but don’t leave me alone too long with a restaurant menu in my hands.

What a cute story about your decision. You are a world traveler!

I like your reasoning. My answer to why I do things is usually because I can.

  5. I’ve shocked friends with a “crazy reason”

Not always in my interests but always within the longer journey “wish I never set out on this…” and then I “just have to finish it” 🙂

But now the shorter craziness has worked and I begin to enjoy the journey as it unfolds
