We Wouldn’t Be Much Help

Sandra’s comment about the golden retriever post was,

I missed this one, I could not hold a dog like that, hope Beau never tries it. LOL

Andy and I agree with that — we don’t buy items, like microwaves and printers, that weigh over 20 pounds now. An even bigger concern would be losing our balance and falling. Just last night the AARP Bulletin had an article about how to fall safely if it starts to happen. We’re not sure we could think that fast even if we weren’t trying to hold a 75-pound pup. Although I would still rather a golden retriever than a chihuahua. As Max Ehrmann wrote in Desiderata:

Avoid loud and aggressive persons; they are vexatious to the spirit.

Amen to that!

  1. I’d have a lot of anything that wasn’t solid, like moves a lot. Let alone something weighing more than a few kilos!

There is a lady in our neighborhood that has 3 rescue old Chihuahuas. None of them are nasty and they do not bark. I told her how odd I find that, because every one i met were barking/attacking little guys. I love all dogs, but for our house Big Dogs Rock. we have never had one under 50 lbs. 3 at 50, 1 at 60 2 at 80 .. I am thinking even if a Chihuahua jumped in my arms I might fall over.

PS. soon we will have to stop buying 30 lb bags of dog food and go to the 15 lbs

My back agrees with you! At my former workplace we were mandated to take safety training classes which included how to pick up and carry oversize and/or heavy objects.

Several months ago I started to fall. I did some pretty fancy footwork so ended up sitting on a hassock instead of lying on the floor. I was so happy I succeeded in doing that. I have been noticing lately that my balance is not what it used to be plus I don’t pick my feet up as high so throw rugs are now becoming a hazard. Ah, the challenges of aging when living a sedentary lifestyle. I wish I’d stayed at least half as active as Andy.

We gave up throw rugs years ago because Andy doesn’t pick up his feet. But he seems to do fine up in the mountains on rough ground.

I don’t think teaching me how to fall right would work for me. Natural instinct would kick in and I would end up falling wrong for sure.

  7. Hello Friend! Catching up on your posts – You’ve been busy in all the best ways! What fun to have Kaitlin, Torben, and the grand-pups visiting, and I love that you’re learning some Spanish – We just had a big discussion about that at work, because we rely really heavily on the 2 girls and the doctor that do speak it – I know some words and can kind of understand Spanish and some words in Urdo/Arabic too because the family of the doctor I work for is from Pakistan, (he was born/raised in the DC area) – But ‘southern,’ I speak fluently. 🙂

And I’m with you on the falling, and I’d be like that Golden with the chihuahua’s too! I can lift about 80 lbs, and my goal is to continue to be able to do that as long as we have Labs and Goldens.

Have a good week, or should I say “ten una buena semana!”
