Moose in New Mexico

Moose sighting near Tesuque, courtesy of State Game Commission Vice Chairman Tirzio Lopez

Moose aren’t native here, but some have been seen in the past couple of years. Apparently they’ve migrated down from Colorado. They’re still rare but people are warned to keep their distance if they happen to see one. Moose can become aggressive if spooked.

We think that’s neat. And we love the fact that New Mexico still has some wide open spaces.

the moose looks like he is out for a morning stroll in the desert.. a blogger friend that lives in CO says she is more afraid of moose than the mountain lions and bears. she told a story once that they were trapped inside their house by a moose on their front deck and had to wait until he decided to leave on his own.

This reminds me of a well-loved cartoon, Rocky and Bullwinkle. Boris and Natasha, too. Aaaah, good times.

  4. Awesome. Such a beautiful animal.

Moose are powerful animals; you do not want to get in their way. The only one I ever liked was a stuffed one we named Mellowstone Moose we bought as a souvenir at Yellowstone park.

My uncle was an avid hunter and he got a moose on one of his hunting trips. He had the head mounted and I can remember sitting in their living room and this mammoth moose head was hovering right over me.

What a photo. But yes, moose have been known to kill people when protecting their young.

Looks like a house just down the hill from this fellow.

  9. interesting – I just watched one of my uTubers who travel here, there and somewhere – and they were in Alaska and went to a conservation place that had besides other animals – moose and of course they were behind a fenced area, a safety net for all…but it was huge!
