Tea Diplomacy

Apparently Michelle Francla, a professor of chemistry, caused some consternation when she said the secret to a good cup of tea is “a pinch of salt — and energetic squeezing of the teabag.”

The U. S. Embassy wanted to assure the British that they didn’t agree, so they posted this on X.

Are you a tea connoisseur? Do you microwave it?

I don’t microwave the tea, but I do boil the water in the microwave and pour it over the tea bag. I only use tea as medicine, I don’t drink it for FUN.. bring on the coffee that is often reheated in microwave…

  2. Ann Thompson says:

I used to only drink tea until I realized I do like coffee after all. I used to boil water on the stove in a tea kettle but these days if I want a cup of tea I throw a tea bag and water in a cup and put it in the microwave.

  3. We drink a lot of tea here and I’ve gotta say that we’ve never ever microwaved it!

I’m thinking whoever authored that Press Release was having a good chuckle at someone else’s expense.
Hot or over ice, I just can’t get behind tea. To me, it’s sadly lacking the ‘oomph’ of black coffee. Nevertheless, I still laugh at the former coworker who remarked, “One never buys a glass of tea; you only rent it.”

  5. Linda Sand says:

I do not drink coffee and it has been a long time since I made tea but I do heat water in the microwave to make hot chocolate from a packet of Swiss Miss.

  6. Ginny Hartzler says:

Have you ever put salt in your tea? I never heard of it. But I have heard of putting just a pinch of salt in coffee, which I mean to try but just keep forgetting.

  7. Bruce Taylor says:

I’m a coffee drinker but my wife has one or two cups of tea every morning and she NEVER adds salt to it!

  8. The OP Pack says:

I love a good cup of hot tea, but I can’t imagine putting salt in it, even the tiniest bit. No microwave for me. I boil a kettle of water until it is really hot, then pour some into my mug to fill it. I let it sit for a minute or so to heat the cup, then pour the water out. Time to put in the teabag and fill with boiling hot water. Steep for 6 minutes, add a teaspoon of water and a bit of milk. I prefer English breakfast tea, but I do enjoy Paul Newman’s organic black tea too. I used to love Salada brand but can’t find it here.

  9. huh, microwave it!

I’m not into either tea or coffee. But do like a commercial brewed item that is honey, lemon and ginger (with real cut up pieces of ginger)…that I’ve not for ages, but will do soon.

  10. Jackie M says:

If you want an even worse cuppa than microwaving it, do it in a styrofoam cup.
