Learning to Talk

Commenting on yesterday’s post Linda wrote,

That reminded me of the stage when our daughter had all the inflections right but no real words. And a friend’s daughter was telling jokes before she had words. Cracked us all up.

That reminds me of some of the happiest moments of my life, lying in bed in the morning listening to Kaitlin babbling in her crib, learning to make the sounds she would need to talk. That period didn’t last long enough…then she started saying her first words. And she was no longer content to play in her crib but started crying for me to get her. Hmm. I didn’t want her to think that crying was the best way to ask for help, so for a couple of days when I went in I smiled, put out my arms, and said, “Say Mo…mmy. Mo…mmy.” She caught on fast. Then as soon as she woke up I would hear this sweet voice calling, “Mo…mmy. Mo…mmy.” I had made the rule, so I had to follow it too. My days of lying in bed were over.

agree with Catherine, it is so sweet. i am laughing at myselfe because we taught Beau to talk and now we can’t stop him, much like you and your daughter. at first he only talked when we asked/told him. now he does it with out direction. he can be very demanded

Aw, that’s so sweet. What a nice way to wake up. I always find it funny when a child is first learning to talk. They will say something to you and you have no clue what they are saying but the parents know exactly what they just said.

As the youngest of four kids, I really didn’t like how much more my older siblings were able to do and wanted to master everything they could do. I’m told that I never spoke until I could speak in sentences, and I am certain it was to avoid being laughed at if I spoke baby talk!

    Sweet!
….. And wouldn’t you love to revisit those days of lying in bed — even if for just a little while. Time is a thief.
