An English language teacher says to his student. βEnglish can be a difficult language. It can be understood through tough thorough thought, though.β
It’s the pronunciation that makes English so hard. Hurray for phonetic languages like Spanish.

Well isn’t that a tongue twister. So true though. I can’t imagine how difficult it must be to learn English as a second language.
Yes, it’s really hard.
…I’d like to meet the guy who developed English in a dark alley someday.

Jack is learning how to read and finds it so frustrating. I tell him that english is a very old, very complicated language, and that it’s just hard.
I helped out at a grammar school once helping first graders to learn to read. One little boy went up to the teacher crying because he was having so much trouble. The teacher got down to his level, looked him in the eye and said, “Yes, it is hard. But I think you can do it.”
That is quite the line! English has a lot of sight memorization, to be sure. Not always logical. I don’t know how it is to learn compared to other languages because I know no others–lol! π
The pronunciation is extremely hard.
I was thinking about those very words yesterday. My mom liked to play a game called Upwards. It was like scrabble except you could build vertically as well as horizontally. That “ough” combination was a fun one to build on. Rough, tough, though, thought, etc.

I have heard that English is one of the hardest languages to learn.
The pronunciation is. Not the grammar.
It sure can!

Props to those whose first language isn’t English … but who genuinely try.
π
Yes, that sums it up nicely!

That is a great sentence. The English language has so many oddities that must make it very challenging for a non-English speaking person to learn why the rules alway seem to change.
A lot of it is historical so sometimes there are no rules.
