I was so busy thinking of the pups yesterday I forgot it was the tenth anniversary of the fire.
Here are some of the pictures Andy took as he was beating feet and heading home.
There are more pictures and better resolution ones of these on Flickr here.

These bring tears to my eyes. So glad you know — and practice — evacuation procedures.
One of my h.s. chums and her husband barely escaped with their lives the one before yours (in 2000) because Bear was trying to save as much of their belongings as he could.
Andy is also prepared to shelter in place since there is only one road out and there’s always the chance it could be blocked. He has some good smoke masks just in case, but mainly he works hard to keep a 100-foot defensible space around the house, greenhouse, and shed.
Fires are so scary! Glad you’ve put so many years between you and that fire/
Sooner or later there will be another one, but we’re no longer in the middle of a forest.
Recently there was a massive fire on the Mourne Mountains, 30 miles south of Belfast. Luckily it didn’t spread too far and didn’t cause too much damage. Good to know you have a big defensible space around your property.
Years ago they said twenty five feet, and to do some thinning farther than that. We did what they suggested, but it wasn’t enough for such a hot fire.
gosh 10 years – seems so long ago – time heals I guess, and Andy does his best to make sure that he is “safe”
It’s hard to believe it’s been that long.
How scary that would be. I was reading your replies to comments and that’s good to know that Andy has an plan for sheltering in place in case the road is blocked.
Yes. He should be all right if it ever happens.
So, what is his plan if he can’t evacuate?
Sad to see…yet beautiful. Does that make sense?
Good smoke masks, the garden hose, food if he has to stay a while.
Ten Years. Wow!
Driving through the Colorado mountains a little over 200 miles north of you, we could see where past fires had gone through, providing natural fire breaks. There are still many places, though, where past aggressive fire management practices have left an overburden of forest fuel loading. Interestingly, though, we didn’t see any obvious signs of the pine beetle infestations that were so rampant a few years ago.
That’s interesting about the beetles. We should be in a lot better shape than ten years ago because all of the trees burned down. The new growth is a lot less dense, and Andy’s working hard to keep it fairly cleared out for 100 feet around the buildings.
everyone should take a page from andy’s plan and yours, be ready, have a go bag, if pets be ready for them too. i looked at flicker and those show the awesome power of the fire and how deadly it was and how quickly it can spread. so glad it has been 10 years and hope for another 10 for you and your home…
Thank you! Fingers crossed.
That is so scary and so very sad. ((Hugs))
Yes, thanks of the hugs. 🙂
