this afternoon.
He’s up on the land as I write this. When I watched the briefing this morning they didn’t give any indication this would happen, but at 11 AM they made this announcement:
Evacuations will be downgraded to “set” for the Sierra de Los Pinos and Cochiti Mesa communities, and NM Highway 4 will open to local traffic effective today at noon.
The threat of the Cerro Pelado Fire to these communities and the highway has been reduced, making it safe for residents and motorists. Firefighters have made good progress constructing firelines around the perimeter of the fire and protecting structures. This combined with predicted winds favorable to pushing fire away from the communities make it safe for residents to return home.
Returning residents should remain in “set” mode, meaning being ready to leave on a moment’s notice. If conditions change and the fire threatens communities again, these areas could return to “go” status.
Motorists should drive slowly along the highway with headlights on. Fire equipment and firefighters will be travelling along Highway 4 and accessing the fire, especially at intersections with Forest Service Road 10 and Forest Service Road 280. If heavy traffic impedes firefighting efforts and endangers firefighter safety, Highway 4 could be closed again.
He was happy when he took off, of course, and he expected to have to clear trees off the road, but he plans to turn the fans on in the greenhouse.

Sounds like things are getting better! Can you smell it? Does it affect your lungs?
We can sometimes smell it down here if the wind is right. It’s supposed to get worse tomorrow because the winds will pick up.
O such Great news! thank you for sharing it with us!
XO
I will keep you posted. 🙂
oh great news – if a bit cautious – go Andy, and Go Safe
Yes, he will be cautious, but he was happy to be able to go up there today.
Oh that was good news. I imagine Andy was one happy guy being able to go up there.
Yes. 🙂
YAY! so happy for him.. and that the fire is not threatening as much as it was. I know he was so happy to get up there and hope there was no damage from the fans being off
Yes, it’s great the plants in the greenhouse did so well.
I am glad for Andy to be able to check on things. I cannot imagine living with the stress of having to be able to pick up and leave ho mg e as t a moments notice.
We’ve only had to evacuate from down here twice so far, in 2000 and 2011. The apartment was still here when we got back, and we had several hours to do it.
I’m so happy for you!
Thanks!
Good news!
Yes, thanks.
Yay!
