Andy lost some fruit and conifer trees in the fire, and he was concerned about the plants in the greenhouse because he shut the fans off just before we were locked out for almost a month. The wind had been blowing so hard the west vent couldn’t stay open and the the system was overheating. He had planned to turn the fans back on the next day.
So anyway, we was prepared for bad news when we allowed back up there. The temperature in the greenhouse was about 105°F, but the automatic watering system was working and the plants were thriving. Here’s what it looked like two weeks ago:
There are more and higher resolution pictures here on Flickr.
In the last picture Andy is picking a couple of cucumbers. We’ve also harvested some lettuce and plenty of beet greens. He had originally planned to pull out the old plants and start a new garden, but the fire has changed his priorities.

So, it seems, the heat & humidity (and the protection of the greenhouse) worked like a charm!!
Yes. 🙂
All looks very healthy to us. We have ONE tomato plant in a smart pot on our deck. By this time each year, we usually have 10-15 tomatoes appearing. So far we have three. Maybe it is because it was too wet here in May. Some extra fertilizer may help, but it may be too late for the fruit to get big enough and ripen.
Tomatoes won’t ripen up there outside of the greenhouse. I have a picture of Kaitlin and I harvesting green tomatoes in the snow.
That’s wonderful that plants survived and thrived in the greenhouse.
It made us happy. 🙂
Thanks for the rec. I just ordered Grandpa’s Weeder, hope it works on small weeds as well as big dramatic ones. We’ll see.
Glad your plants loved life in the greenhouse. Who knew!
Please let us know how it works for you. It didn’t work for Andy today, probably because the ground is too rocky.
wow! how exciting to find all that wonderful GREEN after the fire!
the little green house is certainly pulling its weight! xoxo
Yes! 🙂
Wow, it is lush and gorgeous!
Yes. 🙂
Wow, it looks amazing. At least you know that the pants can take the heat so long as they are getting water.
It was a pleasant surprise to learn that. 🙂
the garden is beautiful and I don’t think it could look any better. awesome photos on flicker and yum on the cucumbers. seems it thrived in the extreme heat as long as it had water… it is good that he has the property to keep maintaining it, it keeps him young and thriving tooo
He’s slowing down, but hanging in there. 🙂
Wonderful bounty!
Pardon if this is a stupid question, but how much/how deep soil is required?
Not a stupid question at all, the soil is two feet deep.
Well the greenhouse has paid you both in spades – survived and kept on growing – which must be good news for K & T who planted the majority of plants when they were last with you…
Yes. 🙂
