Monday we thought we were finally getting started with the cleanup and fixing our well. Then it rained that afternoon and everything had to be set back a week.

There was also a bit of erosion along our 1.1-mile driveway. Notice the handle of the 5-foot-long shovel:

With any luck the road will be passable by the end of the weekend. And we’ll finally start getting something done Monday…the Good Lord willing and the creek don’t rise again.

No, we use the Jeep. At the moment the road is impassable even with 4-wheel drive low range, but hopefully that will change this weekend.

I am surprised by the amount of erosion. I know it rained after the fire, but did it rain that much? If so, will the melts from the winter snows and the spring rains bring even greater erosion issues?

We had about one inch of rain Sunday, three inches Monday. The road was still passable Monday morning when we went up with the well driller but got washed out by the downpour that afternoon.
The erosion on the side of our driveway is because it’s pumice. That erodes very fast.
Yes, we will have problems from time to time. That’s to be expected after a severe fire. The Forest Service is planting and mulching grass by helicopter to reduce the flooding. Andy took pictures of the little flash flood we had this afternoon. See the latest pictures on Flickr.

That will teach me not to whine about my driveway. A helicopter is the appropriate vehicle that comes to mind.
Looney…the road certainly has taken a battering…by the looks of it one could carve a road out that had high “walls” – drive along the bottom of the “washout”
My drive is concrete but my neighbour who lives in the ROW has a dreadful driveway – it is mainly gravel (little stones), grass and some ruts which someone has attempted to fill with broken bricks…but nothing on your scale, Jean 🙂

We had some roadwork done today and that patch of driveway looks a lot better. I’ll post a couple of pictures at cheerfulmonk tomorrow. Please keep your fingers crossed that it doesn’t rain enough tonight to wash things out again!
