Time for Some Help

It’s been an interesting week. I’ve been fighting off a cold since last Wednesday, and I haven’t had much appetite. That’s unusual for me and by this morning I was having trouble even drinking enough water and was clearly getting dehydrated.

So when Andy came home from the land we went down to our local Urgent Care. I’ve had good luck with them in the past and was lucky again today. They do plenty of business but we didn’t have to wait long and the doctor took all the time he needed. He didn’t try to jump to a conclusion and rush me out the door. We ended up deciding that I should try some anti-nausea pills and try to drink enough water to rehydrate myself. But he would gladly have given me a saline IV if I had preferred. He also said to be sure to get enough salt, something that wouldn’t have occurred to me. So I took a pill and have been munching on pretzels and drinking water. I wouldn’t say I’m back to normal yet, but it looks encouraging. I will definitely keep you posted. 🙂

I’m mainly grateful that Urgent Care is there if I need them. What about you? Do you have a resource like this? Whom do you go to when you need help?

Thanks to Evan, Cathy, Maria and Rummuser for commenting on last week’s post.

I hope you continue to improve and get well soon.

I usually go to a clinic in the nearest large town, unless it’s outside their normal hours and it can’t wait. Then we use the emergency room at the local hospital, but that’s only been once in all the times we’ve lived here, not counting the times we were delivered there by ambulance — once for me in 1996 and once for Karen after our December 26, 2010 accident.

Here is wishing you speedy recovery. Knowing you as I do, it should not be too long before you do.

My GP and my dentist both, have their clinics just across the road from us. They are also available on the phone 24/7 for any emergencies. They gladly make house calls at need.

There is a top class reasonably priced general hospital just across the river from us and it is just ten minutes drive from home. If I or Ranjan cannot drive any of our neighbours will gladly take us there, as would we if they needed.

    Lucky me!

There is an “urgent care” type place not far from here, I had to get an x-ray there once but I’ve not been there for After Hours stuff. There is a medical centre right across the road from here, until I moved to have my doctor there, I have been a couple of times as a walk-in emergency…but usually I haven’t got really sick/hurt AH (touch wood).

Sorry to hear, you are having ‘old age’ problems 🙂 and succumbing to ailments or do you think it’s just a continuous problem since the last time, a few weeks ago. That will need some serious antibiotics or similar to right you again…

Me a box of fluffy ducks at the moment…even the problems that rose up last week with the lawncare guy needing to be sacked have basically just flowed past me 🙂

I used to munch on pretzels. Yummm! Then I decided I didn’t need all that white flour & salt. :/

    Mike,
Emergency rooms are great when you need them, but this Urgent Care place is even better for a non-emergency but something that needs attention right away. I’m disappointed in my doctors’ group. When you phone you listen to a message about how they give such great service and are there for us. They’re open until 8 Monday-Thursday and also have Saturday hours. Yet when I phoned they didn’t say they would work me in. The UC was clearly the place to go.

    Rummuser,
House calls in this day and age? Talk about service! Yes, lucky you.

    Cathy,

…you are having ‘old age’ problems 🙂 and succumbing to ailments

😀 At one point the doctor did say that dehydration was more of a problem when we get older. So when I came out I laughed and told Andy, “It’s just old age.” It’s certainly better than having something seriously wrong.

    gailredhair,
I haven’t eaten pretzels in a long time because of the salt and white flour. At the moment empty calories are better than none. 🙂

    Jean,

the old/dehydration problem is often the case…plain water sipped so you’ve keeping everything topped up throughout the day…and if you feel the need drink more than a sip.

if you can’t cope with plain – add a squeeze of lemon or a few drops of something else; if you don’t like chilled or room temp; have a cup of hot water…

because I exercise quite a bit, brisk walking and general walking I try to keep up a general slurp. I chill my water then get it out of the fridge and everytime I pass the bottle (I have a couple) I take slurp…

occasionally I need to drink alot more in one hit…but I try to listen to what my head is saying and drink according to that!!

    Cathy,
Mostly I manage to drink plenty of water every day. The problem right now is my stomach can’t process it very fast. So mostly I’m trying to drink rather than eat. If things aren’t better by morning I’ll probably go see the doctor again.

  8. Rummuser says:

Jean, I often take Electral, which is a rehydration prescription powder, particularly in the summer. There must be equivalents available as over the counter medicines there. Just a thought to share.

  9. Evan says:

We have a couple of clinics like that locally – not 24hrs but fairly good. Local hospital is pretty good.

    Rummuser,
Apparently Electra has saved a lot of lives in India. Good for them for developing it. Around here the fad is sports drinks with electrolytes, the idea being if you work out too much you need to replenish your supply. Apparently a lot of people use the drinks when water would do the job just fine.

    Evan,
The hours for Urgent Care is 9am-7pm, which I think is great. And the hospital ER is always there if needed.
