Optimist or Pessimist?

Ed Stein

An optimist waits up until midnight New Year’s Eve so he can welcome the new year in. A pessimist waits up so he can make sure the old one leaves.

The trouble with that joke is it assumes the new year will be better than the old one. A true pessimist is more apt to go to bed and pull the covers over his head. He’s more like an office mate I had once. His favorite motto was

Cheer up. Things are bound to get worse.

What about you? Do you think this coming year will be better or worse than 2009? Or do you think it will be about the same?

Thanks to Mike, gaelikaa, bikehikebabe, Evan, Rummuser and Cathy for commenting on last week’s post

It’s going to be better because I’m going to make it better.

    bikehikebabe,
Good for you! One resolution I like is, “This is going to be the best year of my life…so far.” No sense limiting ourselves. 😉

Better in some ways and no change in others, but, since personally, 2009 was a good year, areas with no change will be generally good, too. (Warmer would be good.)

    As to personal stuff: better

As to planetary stuff: continuing to worsen

    Mike,
My 2009 was good too, so the same would be great. I’ve noticed your unusually cold weather. Ours has been strange. We had a record low recently but also some very pleasant weather. As I recall another cold snap is due.

I thought your post about people buying old books for fuel was sad.

    Evan,
Unfortunately I agree with you about the planetary stuff. It’s hard to believe mankind isn’t in for a rough ride. But we can’t control that so no sense letting it ruin our lives.

‘Twixt optimist and pessimist the difference is droll
    The optimist sees the doughnut
    The pessimist sees the hole.

I don’t know who owns that quote. But it’s good. The first day of the new year a close relative passed away. But it was the start of a new life for him. I don’t see anything bad in that.

      gaelikaa,
I agree. when someone is ready to pass on we may miss them but also be happy for them when it’s over. I felt that way about my mother.

  7. Rummuser says:

    Different.

      Rummuser,
That’s for sure! I, of course, am more proactive than you and will continue developing the art of “affecting the quality of the day”. It’s a great hobby. 🙂

Last year was pretty darn good in some areas of my life including managing to pass all my papers (other years, failed at least one)
Right now, life is interesting…I am learning to live errr work with the ‘fridges’ no more surprises but it has meant having to alter some of my fuel intake styles!
It’s still quite quiet but that hasn’t meant that the days have been longer…I now go out somewhere, walking every days. Yesterday I went to the ‘dairy’ (small sort of corner store that sells milk products, tins of food, other small things that you have forgotten at the regular bigger store)…I went there for an ice cream! Took me 30mins to get there!! And approx 20mins back (more downhill)
Probaby try for Titirangi Village tomorrow approx 45mins away, in different direction to the dairy (uphill most of the way there, easier back!) – I went possibly 1/2way today as a test of my endurance. At the Village is a small supermarket and a variety of eateries so that will be the goal…maybe lunch up there + collect a few food supplies!

oops that’s not answered whether the year will be better or worse…I hope it will be about right especially as I have been thinking about doing/getting certain things i.e. disability issues solved!

Hooray for you, Cathy in NZ! Getting exercise is so important.

  10. Jean says:

    Cathy,
You never have to answer the question. It’s just put there to stimulate thoughts. I agree with bikehikebabe, good for you for getting exercise. It’s one of the best mood enhancers there is. 🙂
