If you’re reading this sitting down, you might consider standing up.
That’s the first line of a Wall Street Journal article about a study on the health hazards of sitting and watching TV. We all know that being a complete couch potato isn’t good for our health, but the interesting thing about this study is the participants got between 30 and 45 minutes of exercise every day. That wasn’t enough to mitigate the effect of long periods of sitting.
Just another reminder to get up and move every so often, even if it’s just shaking and wiggling our bodies. I use this as a motivational video:
What do you use?
We all know how important exercise is, but here’s 2 tidbits from TV. The Doctors (TV) said fidgeting is good for you. That means Anything to get you moving.
Yesterday Dr. Oz (TV) said Don’t spend time sitting before dinner, EXERCISE! 🙂
Bikehikebabe,
I agree with you about fidgeting. I do that especially if I have to sit for long periods, like waiting for an appointment or sitting in a car. It keeps the circulation going and the joints lubricated. Watching TV is no problem because I always exercise when I do it, no sitting then for me.
for watching TV…I actually take time out from everything I am forever doing.
right now…I road testing a foot stool to try and curtail circulation problems and the plantar fascia – likes the rest!
i can’t use the foot stool…at this particular computer space but by the end of next week it will all be in a new space in the house, different ‘table’ as well so the foot stool can be used there!

Cathy,
Good luck on getting things set up the way that works for you.
Rummuser,
Sounds like a great source of motivation!
Well, Jean, I don’t know. I usually get palpitations during commercial breaks in the wake of which I often lose the plot of the film I am watching. Palpitations, shaking one’s head, flying into a rage alternated by laughing at the stupidity of this world burn up calories at the rate of knots, keeping all sorts of muscles active, whilst sitting down.

Ursula,
That should work too. 🙂
Whenever I have to go on a long car trip I make sure I wiggle and shake from time to time to keep my circulation going and keep my joints lubricated with that good synovial fluid.
On car trips I move my arms, hands & shoulders in time to the music. Rock music with the beat, is best. I do sort-of a lap dance too.?? (I’ve never seen a lap dance)
bikehikebabe,
I don’t even use music, except maybe the tunes in my head or the ones I sing. Poor Andy!
