Tumbling Tumbleweeds

I was a Roy Rogers fan when I was a kid, and I used to like this song. So I still get excited as an adult when I see tumbleweeds from time to time. It brings back happy memories.

Unfortunately some homeowners in California and Utah aren’t nearly as fond of them. The tumbleweeds are a nasty nightmare. They are a mess to clean up and some people even find themselves trapped in their homes until they are cleared out.

ohmygosh. I loved roy and dale. and pat. and the jeep!
that clip brought tears to my eyes even now. because my dad could and did whistle just like that. he could do the warbling whistle too. I had forgotten that until hearing this song. it was wonderful. we used to ask him to “sound like a bird!” I tried to learn to whistle but never could get the real hang of it.
I’ve always thought it sounded so beautiful.
and those tumble weeds are horrible! and they’re stickery to touch. and a fire hazard I would think!

Don’t forget Trigger and Bullet. 🙂 I’m so glad it brought back some good memories for you.

And yes, the tumbleweeds aren’t only a pain to clean up, they are a definite fire hazard. Another “tinderbox waiting for a match.”

Roy Rogers and tumble weeds were my boyhood memories too. Interesting to see how the humble tumbleweed has now become a menace!

That’s neat that you know about Roy and tumbleweeds too! I would not have guessed that. It is indeed a small world. 🙂

I remember seeing an occasional tumbleweed growing up in western Nebraska, but nothing like in that video. Tumbleweeds invade is an apt title, especially as they are not native to North America, but were imported as seeds contaminating other seed shipments, such as flax seed imported to South Dakota from Russia in the 1870s.

We see (in small amounts) rolling about on the roads when we’re travelling north but the tumbleweed- or rather a strain known as Hairy Panic – has been a problem in a Victorian town for a few years now.

I wouldn’t wish that on anyone. I have enough problems dealing with dandelions – not sure how I’d go with that ?

Thank you for the link. Someone could make money by renting out goats to eat the stuff. I would NOT suggest burning it if conditions there are as dry as they are here. At the moment outdoor burning is illegal here because of the drought. It’s interesting that people deliberately introduced the plant.

  5. wow another object I’ve never encountered… in the utube clip – reminds me of some sort of cartoon…
