There are several small fires in our area causing a lot of smoke, but apparently the National Park Service and the Forest Service think they are under control. The amazing thing is they are occurring in July — the height of the “rainy season.” They don’t make rainy seasons the way they used to!

LOL!
well. I wish I had confidence in them. but I don’t. not after the last “got away from us” managed burn. but then what do I know.
These fires aren’t “controlled burns”, when they purposely set fires to reduce the fuel load. These were started by lightning and the Park and Forest Services decided not to jump right in and suppress them. The fires aren’t very large, and the smoke is partially because the fuel is not tinder dry. It may be a good strategy. Time will tell. The thing we have to keep in mind is sooner or later there will be fires, the trick is to try to minimize the damage and increase the health of the forests.
Guess I’d be uneasy with burnoffs in the midst of drought but trust they know what they’re doing and will monitor carefully.
I’m guessing it will turn out fine. I’m glad it’s not my job and responsibility.
same reply as tammy…I know they have reasons, but they never seem to go as planned…they do that kind of thing here, particularly in the South Island plains area and they often have to say “got away from us…” but often they don’t come up with that reasoning to start with they say an arsonist or a dropped cigarette not stomped out; authorities just don’t like to admit “we were wrong”…
In this case the fires have been started by lightning. And it helps a lot that there are no high winds — that’s when fires really get out of control.
okay so it was caused my “nature” – well hope the humans are not assuming that “nature” will put them out…
I think the rain came our way instead. We had more rain this last week than we normally get for the whole month of July. Two weeks ago, our county was considered “excessively dry.”
We could use some of that!
Trust no one. Especially those who are in charge.
Ha!
😉
I’m glad it’s not my job!
Climate change cannot be denied any more.
We ain’t seen nothing yet!
There are plenty of wildfires in Northern Ireland every year, many of them started deliberately. Fortunately they seldom spread over large areas. I don’t understand the mentality of the people responsible. It gives them some sort of perverted thrill.
In Minnesota they stopped calling them “controlled burns” and started calling them “prescribed burns”. I’m not sure how that helps if one gets out of control.
