The Gazing Ball

One of the first things Torben did when we got to the land Saturday was get the binoculars and look for the gazing ball. He didn’t see it, so he, Andy, and Kaitlin went down to see what had happened. When they got to the stake it was nowhere to be seen, and Andy thought it was gone forever. But Torben didn’t give up and finally found it way down the hill.

He took this picture standing by the ball, looking up at Andy and Kaitlin standing by the stake. Yes, they’re a long way away!

When he brought it up, they put it in some bushes next to the stake so it would be safe until they figured out a better way to mount it.

We’re still puzzled about how it could have gone through the bushes and jumped over a log to get to where it wound up, so we’re using our default explanation when strange things happen — it must have been a bear!

Kaitlin and Torben had some good suggestions for remounting the ball, and we’ve already started working on them. Who would have guessed when Beate and Tim gave us the ball that it would turn into one of our favorite family projects!

  1. The OP Pack says:

We don’t know the story behind the gazing ball, but we keep wondering how it got that far without breaking.

  2. that’s an extraordinary distance the “ball” has travelled…maybe it too wanted to see what was further away!
