Speaking of Eye Exams

Andy needs to get his driver’s license renewed every year now — the MVD wants to check his eyesight. So he went to the eye doctor Wednesday to make sure his eyes are good enough to pass without glasses. The right one still is, and it only takes one eye, but just in case he got a piece of paper from the doctor saying so and he also ordered new glasses just in case the MVD makes him wear them.

It pays to plan ahead.

Some things in life get more complicated as we get older, and some things get a lot easier. I love Andy Rooney’s quote,

I didn’t get old on purpose, it just happened. If you’re lucky, it could happen to you.

Fingers crossed!

Getting old isn’t for sissies but it beats the alternative.
    Good planning on Andys part.

I loved Andy Rooney! his quote puts it into perspective doesn’t it?
we’re allowed ‘corrective lenses’ here. and if you’re ever stopped by the police you’d better hope you have them on if you’re the one driving! 🙂

The poor driver! But I burst out laughing.

    • actually the only reason I gave up my driver’s licence was because when I went to renew, they said “You need to get an uptodate eye test” and even though I tried to explain the DL wasn’t about driving, I hadn’t driven anything of that magnitude for years…they wouldn’t renew without test. So I had to go down another channel for photo ID…

A friend I have said one day “oh forgot my glasses, can’t read that…” and I said something like “oh when did you get glasses and for why?” and she said “oh I have to have them for driving…but I don’t wear them” that is when it clicked with me why I had gotten to a point of not wanting her to chauffeur me much, because she had some near-misses including other drivers tooting at her – this scenario usually caused her to say inside car “stupid man, I had the right..” or similar when clearly she wasn’t in the right at all.
She has other issue with driving, and other arenas…as she has gotten older, her short fuse has got worse, along with telling others how to live their lives, including me. Sadly, I see a large “fall” coming for her. One of our other friends, said “she hasn’t adapted well to getting older…”

sorry for ranting…but I feel my life is precious, why put it at risk 🙂

That’s a wise move on your part! Andy drives from time to time when Kaitlin is here so she can check his driving ability. So far he seems to be doing fine. I am super cautious and drive only around town unless Andy gets a shot in his eye in Santa Fe, then he drives there and I sometimes drive home. We go when there is little traffic and so far haven’t had any problems. If he ever thinks my driving isn’t good enough and doesn’t feel comfortable doing the driving we could go through the senior center and get a volunteer to drive him. We are aware that our abilities change and that we need to keep checking.

The driver’s license eye exam is always a problem for our Dad, but his eye specialist fills out a form for him so he doesn’t have to do that test at the DMV. Mom says getting old is not fun at all.

  4. I should also see an eye doctor it been a while.
    Coffee is on

We are okay here, in my province, as long as we can pass the test, with or without glasses. I’d be sunk without them!

So would I! Until the last year or so Andy has been very lucky with his eyes. He has needed reading glasses for a while, of course, but for most of his life his vision was better than 20/20. Fingers crossed we can keep them from getting much worse.

I love that Andy planned ahead.
    A wise man.

    I wear glasses.
I have to take them off to see things up close.
But desperately need them to see something across a room.
Seriously, a person’s feature are a blur to me if they are 10 ft away.
    But I don’t mind glasses.
I used to be vain when I was young and had to wear contacts.
Now I’m just tired, so I wear my glasses instead, but glasses are much more accepted now.
As far as someday not driving? Oh god, I’ll have a fit if I can’t drive!

    • Jean says:

My eyes are bad too, and when I was young it took me a couple of years to convince my folks I needed glasses. I loved them and have never been tempted by contacts because I’m paranoid about my eyes. I wasn’t about to take chances with them.
