wow. that’s exactly why to this day I’m uncomfortable having cut flowers in the house. right or wrong good or bad… I remember taking walks with my Gram when I was very small and wanting to pick “the pretty flowers!” she would gently say “no! leave them alone to live and enjoy the sunshine! they have a right to live too!” it was indelibly ingrained somewhere in my mind.
and I just can’t do it. never have.

  2. I was in the floral business for twenty years. I love cut flowers, potted flowers or flowers growing outside. They all have a place. At my house when spring finally brings the daffodils I will cut half to bring in and leave the rest. We are getting snow right now!

Flowers warm my heart too. We have a lot of daffodils growing up on the land, and Andy carefully keeps them well watered during the dry seasons. Ours are still buried in the snow, and when they start to flower he will bring some of them down so we can enjoy them here, and when they’re at their peak we will go up for a picnic to celebrate them.

Our local Hospice/Visiting Nurses sell daffodils for their fund raiser every Spring. I will talk about that a bit more in tomorrow’s post.

I think that’s neat that you were in the floral business. It brings back memories of all the flowers we’ve had in the house — or in my office. I hadn’t thought about it for years, but one day a big pot of mums appeared on my desk at work. Andy, who usually isn’t very romantic, had sent it for our anniversary. Florists bring a lot of joy to people.

I would rather see them outside than in a vase. Flowers are nice but I never really liked getting them since they don’t last long enough.

    • Jean says:

We don’t buy cut flowers except for daffodils for a fund raiser every spring, but Andy does bring some of our daffodils home when they start to bloom. I like flowers in pots better because they last longer.

Well, at least Daffy Daffodil will make someone inside smile – hopefully lots of housebound folks will receive fresh cut flowers to enjoy.

Or flowers in pots so they last longer. Our local store sometimes sells daffodils in pots, and I also love hyacinths. We also buy an amaryllis every year because it’s fun to watch them grow. The one we had last Christmas was amazing, it kept putting out new flowers, a total of nine in all, as I recall!

  5. Enjoying the discussion of cut flowers. Personally I’ve never really cared for flowers. I have a flower bed of perennials and that about does it for me. I have desire to bring them in the house. My husband knows the way to my heart isn’t cut flowers, but houseplants. lol

    To each his own. 🙂

    Happy Spring!

Most of our snow melted but the lake is still frozen so I think we are a ways from having flowers growing around here yet.

Dave is romantic but rarely makes typical romantic gestures. I will always remember that he bought me flowers for the 4th anniversary of the day we met.

Many years ago I was walking with some coworkers on a sidewalk next to a park.
We came upon a little flower growing in a crack and we all noticed it and said how amazing that was. Then one of them, someone I really could barely tolerate, leaned over and plucked it from the crack.
But here’s the horrible part. She didn’t pull it from the crack to have but instead she tossed it to the side, into the grass.
This might sound extreme but at that moment I was completely done with her.

    • Jean says:

That would break my heart, and as strange as it sounds, I would take it personally because I identify with plants that struggle and grow out of cracks.

Oh, here’s a more cheerful flower memory!
When I was young and dating, lots of boys gave me red roses and honestly I always thought it was “nice” but roses never really made me happy.
Then I met someone who once was running late to pick me up but he apologized and handed me a beautiful bunch of yellow flowers. As I took them I noticed they still had ROOTS! He had stopped on his way over and pulled them out of someone’s yard!
I acted mortified but I kinda loved it too!
    Lol!

    • Jean says:

Ooh! Poor plant and poor person who lovingly nurtured the flowers. The fellow was thoughtless but was trying to be sweet to you.

Thanks for the memory triggers! Lol!
