No, Not Winter Weather

The National Weather Service issued this “Winter” Weather Advisory Thursday.

…WINTER WEATHER ADVISORY IN EFFECT UNTIL 6 PM MDT FRIDAY…

* WHAT…Wet snow. Total snow accumulation of 3 to 8 inches above 6500 feet with lighter amounts at lower elevations and heavier amounts on mountain peaks.

* WHERE…Jemez Mountains.

* WHEN…Until 6 PM MDT Friday.

* ADDITIONAL DETAILS…Slick spots will develop on roads,
especially roads crossing elevated terrain. Visibility may drop
below a quarter mile at times during periods of heavy snow.
Additionally, the weight of the snow on any leafed out trees may cause branches to break.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS…

A Winter Weather Advisory for snow means periods of snow will cause primarily travel difficulties. Expect snow covered roads and limited visibilities, and use caution while driving.

They might be correct about the weather they predicted, but it is NOT “winter” weather. It’s springtime in the Rockies — the daffodils have come out and our fruit trees are starting to blossom. That’s why spring snows and freezes are such a threat to trees.

Andy didn’t go up all the way yesterday because he would have had to put chains on and he didn’t want to chew up the road. He had no trouble driving today, and he said Torben’s daffodils were still fine. It was too early to see if the fruit trees had been hurt, but it looks promising.

  1. well it shouldn’t even be wintry-like at all…’cause it’s blasting windy, driving rain and not much sun here! I’ve not really gone outdoors, just the back porch to retrieve some thing…and it’s definitely not a nice day. I even put the heating on for 30mins to take away some cold feelings…much nicer now.

      Is that about normal for you this time of year? In the old days our last frost was about Memorial Day, so cold snaps weren’t that unusual here.

    • probably not unusual but of course when the “drop into the season” you forget that “this is normal” …today quite cold to start with but not cold enough for heating.

  2. We are having frost warnings in Michigan but they say our fruit trees will be okay. I hope so. I live in orchard country and they were hit hard last year.

    • Jean says:

      Fingers crossed. Selfishly speaking, we hope your tart cherries aren’t affected. Andy loves Smucker’s Orchard’s FinestĀ® Michigan Red Tart Cherry Preserves. He has it every morning as part of his breakfast.

    we are at least 20 degrees cooler here than normal. and lots of rain.
    if feels strange. but it will be in the 90’s soon enough.
    I hope the little fruit trees are okay. and I’m glad Andy waited to go up.
    sometimes a day can make all the difference.

  4. Ann Thompson says:

    springtime in the rockies sounds too much like winter to me…lol
