Socks

When I was young, I found out that the big toe always makes a hole in my sock. So I stopped wearing socks.
—Albert Einstein

This quote grabbed my attention because it made me curious. I knew that Einstein never wore socks, but I figured it was because it simplified his life for things that were more important to him. I could understand that, even though I like having something soft between my feet and my shoes.

But his holes were always from his big toe? I tend to get mine around the heels. Do you wear socks? If so, where do yours wear out?

I didn’t know he didn’t wear socks. I knew or thought I’ve read that he had trouble keeping his shoes tied. or something like that. mainly because it was a minor inconvenience on his everyday living style.
but of course he was a trendy New England Preppy ahead of his time. NONE of the “cool” guys ever wear socks. even to dressy events.
I love socks. there are no shoes worn inside my apartment. the health and mobility of our toes is very important! I wear socks in here.
I never have worn places in them. I change them out each year and give my old (clean) ones to the homeless donation boxes here in our town. they don’t need money that way like they would at Good Will or the SA. a win/win for both of us!
I read once that Cary Grant always wore his socks inside out so that the seam was smooth against his skin. not a bad idea really.
next time I buy a pair of cashmere socks I’ll have to try that. LOLOL! 😀 xo

I don’t buy cashmere socks, but about a year ago my regular socks felt too rough for me, and I don’t like ones that bind at the top, so I started buying diabetic ones. They’re bamboo, soft, and don’t have seams.

No, I’m not diabetic, but I love them. As they say,

Suits for those who have high demand for comfort, especially particular people like diabetes and the elderly

      Guess I’m officially elderly, LOL!

Mine wear out at the the ball of my right foot close to the arch. I have a callous there so something is rubbing although it doesn’t feel that way.

  3. I wear mine out at the heels also. If I kept the callouses filed down I’d save on my socks. I can’t imagine not wearing socks all that ‘smelly sock’ smell would be inside your shoes.

We could save money on all sorts of little things, but at our age time is often more important than money. Our lifestyle is simple enough that we’re still living well within our means, and that makes for a lot of happiness.

I’m like Einstein, mine wear out at the toe. I still wear them though. I never liked wearing shoes without socks. Sandals yes but not shoes

    • Jean says:

Yes, as you point out, Einstein’s solution wasn’t the only one. If it was just the big toe, why does the rest of the foot have to go without a sock? 😀

  5. I have to wear socks that don’t have a over elasticated leg band, or if they do I have to cut that bit off…so I have a tendency to do the test/secretly in the store. I currently seem to have merino socks that work but the joining seam comes up the mid-heel and a pair recently caused me huge anguish in a pair of my shoes…indoors, like am current sox on with some slopply scuffs that I need to replace with some decent slippers

this is the 2nd post today where I’m replying and already this morning, I’ve just said an hour back – something within the subject matter. I need some new sox and of course decent slippers…

apologies if jumbled grammar, tired of winter and the current ailments…and it’s raining +++ …another day where much of the other days washing gets another rinse outdoors…

I hope you start feeling better soon, and that the weather will start cooperating. I’m like you about over-elasticated leg bands — that’s what started my search that ended up with diabetic socks. They also are seamless, another plus.

Anyway, good luck with your health and weather!

Well, we don’t usually wear socks, although when Lightning breaks a nail, he does wear one for a few days. But Mom always wears socks if she has shoes on. She only goes without socks if she is wearing sandals. For her, it is usually the heels that wear out first. She says it is because she has a super skinny foot, and a super, super skinny heel. So her shoes always slip up and down. The friction must wear out the fabric.

    • Jean says:

That makes sense. I can’t say my heels wear out because my feet are super skinny, not at all! Fortunately there are some online stores that sell a variety of widths — I find it amazing that more places don’t.
