Crazy Weather II

View from our porch yesterday:

Andy says he didn’t have any trouble plowing the 4.4 miles to the start of Road 36 yesterday, but when he turned around and started back a fierce wind came up. It blew three trees down across the road, and the wind was so strong he had trouble opening the door of the truck when he stopped to deal with them.

Then later, when it was time to leave, the driver’s door of the Jeep was frozen so he had to get in the passenger side and crawl over. The driver’s side window was caked with ice, so he ran the heater on high and by the time he got to the highway he could open the door and clear off the ice.

He had actually sent me a message from his Garmin, but it went to my cell phone rather than to my email address. Last night I spent some time putting my email address in as a contact. The keyboard didn’t work the way we expected it to, it wasn’t intuitive at all, but we managed to send a couple of messages to my email address as a test.

And this morning he sent a text via the Garmin to my email address:

G h 50 out. 15

In other words, the outside temperature was 15, the temperature inside the greenhouse was 50. How cool is that!

On the other hand, he sent an email via the internet as he was leaving this afternoon:

…. Two problems–Cold water won’t work in kitchen but bathroom stuff OK, heater in living room quit and I can’t get it started again-probably due to wind since it was working OK this morning. Suspect cold water pipe is too close to outside and froze. I don’t see how to turn it off in case it leaks when warm without turning off the whole house. Sigh!

The house was finished seven years ago, and this is the first time we’ve had that problem. So this weather is definitely unusual.

Wow, Andy really has a lot of work out there.
    Is there anyone with him?
Or somebody that could help him?
That kind of weather is so dangerous and even more so
when a person is by themselves.
My pipes tend to freeze yearly if I don’t let them drip a tiny bit in sub zero weather. But my situation could be entirely different.
Mine is due to lack of insulation in the wall and so the pipes running up to the upstairs bathroom freeze. I just leave the faucets drip ever so slightly.
But nevermind, just realized that won’t help now.
(Sorry, I just worry about everything).
    xoxoxo

Some of the neighbors are starting to do more, so we’ll see.

thanks for the suggestion. We know about letting the faucet drip but he claims we don’t have that much water in our tank. He saw a video once showing a very slow drip and talking about how much water that takes — 7 gallons a day, I think. That would mean he would have to pump more often. He’ll figure out something. He wrote to the plumber tonight for some ideas.

  3. Wow, that’s not only crazy weather, it’s dangerous! I hope the rest of the winter goes better.

  4. Rose says:

Oh, my, that first pic….it sure sets a mood. I hope something can be done for the water freezing…And hope there is no damage when they thaw out.

But it sounds like andy had an adventure this time…

not the time to be out and about!
I know you don’t worry. but I DO! I wish he’d just stay home safe when it’s like that. but then I guess he has to worry about the pipes. reminds me of our days in northern Minnesota. not just inconvenient but definitely dangerous. XOXO

  6. We used to worry about snow, ice and frozen pipes at my Mom’s house, in Kentucky. The house was so cheaply built in the late 70’s, and it made those concerns become a reality more than once. But I have been seeing all the crazy weather on the news. I hope those Thanksgiving travelers packed their patience when they left home for the weekend. I also hope you and Andy are snug and safe as the holiday ends. Take care!

    • Jean says:

Thank you. Kaitlin, Torben, and the pups made their drive home from his mother’s safely. There was rain, etc., but not the scary high winds.

  7. Ann Thompson says:

Wow, that looks and sounds like some nasty weather. Andy is brave being out there in that.
That’s awesome that the greenhouse is at 50 with the outside temp at 15
