Internet Speeds

Yes, it’s easy to get spoiled. Mostly our internet speed down here is all right — and our connection rarely goes out — but up on the land we sometimes get timed out from sites when Kaitlin, Torben, and I use it on their visits. We have it there mainly so Andy can send me emails, especially when he leaves every day, and that works fine.

If I’m curious I use speedtest.net to check my download and upload speeds — it’s a neat toy.

Do you have problems with your internet service/speed?

I am almost afraid to say this, but as a general rule, I don’t have many complaints for what I pay for. There are two vloggers that I have trouble with their videos…one is when she is live, then there is another vlogger from UK that I always have problems with her videos. I have no idea why.

My internet is slower than Christmas when it comes to uploading things….but then that is what I pay for.

We could get faster service up on the land, but it would be more expensive and require installing a different disk. So far it’s not worth it for the little time we would use it.

We now have cable internet. The other day it was out so I plugged in my phone to use as a hot spot for my computer. I was thrilled to learn that still works since I hadn’t tried it since moving out of the motorhome several years ago.

I’ve heard of that. We don’t use it now, but a few moths ago we went to an open house at the local assisted living place. The only internet they have is in their library. Say what?!! Then it dawned on me we could get a SIM card for my iPhone and use it as a hot spot. (Torben gave me the phone and I only use it with WiFi.) It’s a fantastic solution. It’s amazing what options we have nowadays. (We looked into it for up on the land, but the reception is too poor for phone service there.)

  3. I’m happy with my connection – occasionally there is an outage – but usually fixed fast. The wi-fi is good for both laptop and i-phone. I have “fibre optic” which isn’t everywhere – it’s connected to streets bit by bit. I didn’t actually notice much difference, and I’ve heard others say that who like me only had “fibre” but I think is you had some earlier system, you probably saw the improvement.
My server also offers other services, to which I have a landline (have many friends who don’t have even a computer…let alone a i-phone). They are also an electric power company (from my understanding) but I’m happy with Powershop…

(CM by the way…all comments etc, coming in now)

That’s the advantage of living in a city. More populated areas have that option with our phone company, but even here in town we’re too far out in the sticks for them to offer it.

I live in a city of over a million people but we can only assess to one company and different areas have different company. Mine if great but I have friends five miles away with a different service who are always complaining.

I just checked mine on Speedtest and it shows the download speed to be 4+ mbps and I believe I am paying for 50! Still, it seems to work fine so I don’t know.

My provider says “up to” 12 Mbps, I think. I just checked now and Speedtest says 9.72 Mbps for downloads, .71 Mbps for uploads.

That was with my VPN on. When I disconnected the VPN I got 14.13 Mbps for downloads, .76 Mbps for uploads.

In the past the VPN didn’t make much difference when the connection was slow, so who knows. The speed fluctuates.

Our internet speed is pretty good, but then we live not far from the local telephone exchange, which makes a difference. Those in rural areas sometimes have a lot of trouble getting a decent speed (or any internet access at all).

We use cable internet and it has worked well for us over the years. They do have to come out and replace the line from the pole to the house about every 5-10 years. It seems the squirrels running/chewing on it damages the outside and causes problems, darn squirrels, we probably shouldn’t feed them so well. hehehee

It could be a lot worse — around 9 pm December 31, 2018 our electricity went out. Just our apartment — apparently some poor critter was trying to escape the bitter cold and built a nest in our outside junction and managed to short our circuit breaker. So we had no electricity and no heat, since our furnace doesn’t work without the electric fan.

We called the emergency maintenance man, who figured out what the problem was and ran an extension cord from the apartment below us to work our heater fan. So we had heat but no electricity.

They called an electrician the next morning to fix the circuit breaker, but it snowed so much he couldn’t get here right away. When he did come he gave us partial electricity for several days while they ordered a needed part. That’s an adventure we’ll remember!

I have had issues in the past with other providers but I have no complaints about mine now.
