It’s Not Just Humans…

who can ask questions nonverbally. This post, Smart, Patient Pup, from last December is a great example:

Kaitlin, Torben, and the pups spent Thanksgiving with Torben’s mother. The rule there was that pups weren’t allowed on the couch. Now it’s confusing because apparently Torben’s sister’s dog is allowed, but Tempi and Zoe aren’t. Anyway, Tempi checked to be sure that was still true.

She went over to the couch and looked at Kaitlin who said no, still no couch. So Tempi went over to the ottoman, which had a pink blanket on it, and she put her paw on the blanket and looked at Kaitlin. Kaitlin said, as long as she was on the blanket it was all right. OK, the ottoman was better than nothing.

But later Kaitlin inadvertently put the pink blanket on the couch, so Tempi finally got her well-deserved snooze.

Humans can be crazy with their arbitrary rules at times, but Tempi is willing to be patient and work with them.

I think she’s one of the smartest and dearest dogs I know.
she forgives the injustice! and she’s showing how CLEAN her little feet are!
I’m so glad the blanket was there. xoxo

This is one of my favorite pictures in all the world because of the story behind it. I also love the pictures of her sitting so regally.

LOL, good for her working around the rule of not being allowed on the couch.

I always think dogs are just as smart as their owners expect and allow them to be. Apparently she takes after Kaitlin….

Not really. Tempi is incredibly smart. Zoe is energetic, athletic, and good-natured, but not nearly so intelligent.

It’s no doubt true that Tempi communicates so well because Kaitlin and Torben interact with her. One of our favorite stories is when Kaitlin told Tempi to get off the couch on the land once, Tempi did. But then she hopped on the dining room table and sat. The view was much better from there anyway. No one objected because it was such a clever solution.

  4. yes, I love the Regal Ones as well…but sounds like we see/know the difference of what is where and why…

so sweet, the photo and the story. pups are smart. Big is allowed on every bed or sofa or chair in the house. but not OUR bed… I can’t sleep if I am being poked and prodded. the smart part comes in that he knows this but also he knows if it thunders and storms he is allowed on our bed… he comes to my side, pat the bed and up he comes.

If you could see some neighbors I have had and their dogs, you would totally get where I am coming from. But I won’t go into that. And at that Tempi was thinking to decide where the view was better.

We had a collie mix one time. She never begged not got on the bed when Roger was in it with me. Didn’t when he was in the house…but the minute she heard him shut the door as she left, here she came and looked at me. I could say ‘Okay’ or I could point, and up she came.

She is also one that could be laying apparently asleep, but if we started talking about her, not even saying her name, her tail would start wagging. And could not even spell the word walk…but I think it is because of how ‘k’ sounds when it is pronounced…I don’t think she really knew how to spell it.

I babysat out granddaughter and tried to get to take a nap, and let her cry…not even 5 minutes, and this dog could not stand it…she would whine, come look at me and at the bedroom door.

I would love to hear more about your neighbors’ dogs.

Your collie was a smart one too! Zoe is smart in some ways, and she’s very food motivated. When she was recovering from being hit by a car (she jumped over a fence and went exploring), she was lying in the kitchen and Kaitlin left the food she was preparing on the counter and lay down with her to give her some loving attention. Zoe jumped up and scarfed down some of the meat before Kaitlin could react. 😀
