Keeping a Defensible Space

Andy has usually been working about an hour in the morning and an hour in the afternoon clearing the new growth in the defensible space. Except yesterday…he skipped the afternoon because it was over 90° outside. He did extra watering in the greenhouse because even with both fans going it was 100° inside. The hot, dry weather is supposed to continue for a while, which increases the fire danger.

Our fulltime neighbor down the road wrote this morning to say there was a lot of smoke in the air so he came up to our place to check that nothing was burning. Everything was fine.

Clearly Andy has been doing the right thing working on the defensible space!

  1. Andy is a good many to have around, but you already know that don’t you.

  2. The OP Pack says:

Andy has worked so hard. We really admire him and his efforts. We hope the fires stay very far away.

Is that your house with the car in front? It looks like you have quite a view. We have had the same heat, but with a big break today.

    • Jean says:

It’s the house with the truck he uses for snowplowing in the winter. We live down here in an apartment, but he goes up almost every day to work on his projects.

  4. Ann Thompson says:

He’s done good at keeping that cleared.

wow. what an accomplishment. I remember when dead trees were standing everywhere! I’m so glad it’s safer now. it’s looking really good.
and also that he has sense enough not to work too long in that HEAT.
it’s truly dangerous. I wish he could convince the marine of that.
he’s helping a guy refurbish a rental property by Aug. 1st. and it’s in the 90’s and 100’s here. not a great plan I think. but they don’t listen to me! 🙁

    • Jean says:

I agree, that’s not healthy. Beate and Tim helped a lot when the three of them removed the trees. Andy is now trying to keep the vegetation down. So far it’s been vigorous, but maybe the lack of moisture will slow it down.

  6. that’s great about the neighbour, that they would check and then let you know…good to know defensible space is working and also that Andy isn’t whacking away in the heat…

  7. Madsnapper says:

I’m glad Jenny asked you the question of if you lived on top of the hill because I was never quite sure if you live there it sounded like you did not and now I know that this is just your space where you go to it is beautiful and he is doing a fantastic job defending the property. It seems like the new brush cutter is doing a good job

  8. Rose says:

So glad Andy is sensible about the heat. And sounds like wonderful neighbors!
