Avocado Plants

Beate and Tim will be coming back for a couple of weeks, and they’re going to bring Andy an avocado plant. That’s not only sweet, it brings back wonderful memories of the one we grew from a seed in Ithaca over 50 years ago. It ended up taller than Andy, and this is our favorite picture of it:

We tried getting another one started when we moved here, but we didn’t have any luck. Since then Torben has kept trying until he succeeded:

Kaitlin says it’s had a hard life with the dogs and the move and all, but it’s hanging in there. How cool is that?

OMGOSH. yes! that’s very cool. surviving dogs PLUS a move is no easy task.
but the picture of handsome Andy and adorable baby Kaitlin is fantastic!! LOL!
it’s almost as astounding as the overgrown avocado tree in your living room!
    LOVE IT. πŸ˜€ xoxo

Your own avocado tree, that will be so cool. The gift that keeps on giving.

Wow, that is an amazing plant. Good luck with the new one. We should tell Mom to try one of those too.

Woos – Lightning, Misty, and Timber

  4. I would not have an avocado plant in the house with a dog. Why? Here’s what the AKC says: “Avocados contain persin, a fungicidal toxin, which can cause serious health problems β€” even death β€” in many animals. … Persin is present in the avocado fruit, pits, leaves, and the actual plant, so all of these parts are potentially poisonous to your dog.”

That plant in the black and white photo is amazing!

      Thank you for the warning!

Thank you! The Girls hurt it wrestling on it not eating it. We have it up high in case, and they actually don’t eat plants (unlike our cats). I appreciate the tip as it is always good to be very careful!

I would say it is a hardy avocado to to survive the move and all!

  6. Bruce Taylor says:

I’ve told Judy about these avocado plants. She says, “Nyahhhh.”

  7. would the avocado live in the green house?

That’s pretty cool I never thought of bringing one in the house like in that picture. We have a ginormous one that’s been there since 2001 when Bob planted in the ground he grew it from a seed and it was about five years old in the pot about the size of the one in your picture and he planted in the ground and it is huge and it does have avocados

  9. it might even get fruit in the green house, but it takes years to get fruit. bob grew ours from a seed and it was about 5 to 7 years before it got fruit.
here is the label on my 17 posts on our tree… https://snapperone.blogspot.com/search/label/Avocado

Thank you for the link! That’s fun. I would be amazed if we ever get fruit. We just like to see the plant grow…if it does.

That’s a pretty impressive height, though I gather avocado plants can reach a maximum height of 80 feet. You’d need a very tall ladder to check how the top was doing!

    • Jean says:

The one in our apartment didn’t get nearly that tall, of course. And neither will the one in the greenhouse, assuming it can stand the temperatures. It’s a fun experiment.

WOW, that avocado plant that Andy grew is amazing. I don’t like avocados but that’s an impressive plant.
