Gobsmacked

gobsmacked—utterly astounded; astonished:I was truly gobsmacked by their decision.

That’s how I felt when I read a comment on another blog the other day. It said this fear mongering has to stop. Covid is 99% curable, the mandates aren’t laws, and they’re doing harm. We should ignore them and enjoy our family and friends…in person and presumably without masks. I also read about health care providers getting screamed at because they were wearing protective gear. The patients, even the ones dying, didn’t believe Covid is real. It was all a hoax.

Not everyone believes in science, and I’m glad our governor and most of the people in our town do.

Interestingly enough we went shopping after 6 last night because we thought most people would have done theirs earlier on a Saturday…presumably we wouldn’t have a long wait to get in. Not so, the line was 15 minutes long. The store wasn’t crowded but there were no cashiers, just self-serve stations, which take longer than having cashiers. We’re not complaining…we’re willing to do our part. It’s not going to last forever.

Good word to describe reaction on hearing the misinformation being spread about the coronavirus.

    omgosh.
yes. for whatever the reason… they STILL choose NOT to believe it.
here where I live most people apparently don’t believe it either.
but why would scientists lie? they deal in facts.
the big chains like Target and Walmart at least mandate masks. that’s helpful.
but by and large most places are very lax. especially the university.
I mean I just don’t get it. it’s little to ask for people to wear a mask.
but people refuse. and gobsmacked is the perfect word!

I’m not completely surprised, our brains were made for telling stories. The hoax theory obviously touches some people emotionally,

  3. The OP Pack says:

That’s a great word – I am going to share it with the grands. The twins especially will like it.

I am not sure I understand the thinking of people like that – pure idiocy.

I made a few stops at some stores today. Not a lot of people anywhere although there seemed to be a lot of cars on the road. I try to make my visits very short; I know exactly what I want, in and out as quickly as possible.

    Have a good week.

    • Jean says:

I love that word too. We too try to plan ahead and get in and out of stores as quickly as possible. It will be interesting to see how bad the line is when we go again.

I spent quite a bit of time yesterday on a science-based blog defending my stance that they should get back to the topic the site is about instead of going on and on and on about COVID and/or the election conspiracies.

My policy is generally, “Don’t engage.” It’s usually not worth it. Gobsmacked at the ignorance and obstinance of otherwise smart people. (I’ve had to reevaluate my opinion of some people I’ve known for a very long time.)

    • Jean says:

I agree, don’t waste time trying to refute stories that people have an emotional attachment to. As good salesmen know, people buy on emotion and use the rational part of their brain to justify their decisions/beliefs.

  5. Ginny Hartzler says:

The way these people are acting deeply saddens me. We all have freedom of choice, and they should not harass others who believe differently than they do.

  6. Myra Guca says:

I know, right? I’m not sufficiently versed to debate others’ decisions … but have chosen to listen to my heart. That said, I continue to wear a mask and social distance whenever possible.

  7. I too don’t understand why some (or is it many) in the world, don’t understand the stats (for one thing) which show it’s not “going away quickly” – that it’s not just a “seasonal thing” because since the beginning of year there have been two full seasons and 2 half seasons – and it rages on…

Do these same people “think” that heart attacks, pneumonia, and sundry other illnesses that can have you at the cemetery are a hoax! I guess those people will say “that’s bad luck that some one else ….it wasn’t me or my family!”

our PM, Jacinda was saying today – that we are in a vastly different situation here, but the one thing we could do was “close our borders” … very few get away with not having to be 14 days minimum in our quarantine places…and now as more people wish to return/come, they need to book a Q/place, which is included with their flight details…

You have the advantage of being an island and having a wise person at the head of your government. I am so happy for you…it will get a lot worse here before it starts getting better. Take care and enjoy your good fortune!

    • the big difference here is not the size of my islands/combination – it’s that we don’t have “governors in every region/county” who might/do have the power to decide on a course of action…

      https://www.stats.govt.nz/infographics/new-zealands-regional-economies-2016

believe me some regions certainly didn’t like the detraction of levels when my region went into another lockdown (August) and they had to move back up the levels…they certainly didn’t like it at all!

    • Jean says:

I know. Some governors here don’t believe in masks and social distancing, and a lot of people think if something isn’t forbidden, it’s safe. In spite of the warnings a lot of people are visiting over the Thanksgiving holiday. We’ll have to see how bad it gets. 🙁

All I can say is … people drown in stupidity.

  9. Grace says:

Mostly I say “My mind boggles” – every night, time after time, as my husband watches the local and national news…MInd boggled…

  10. Madsnapper says:

I have seen so many comments like this on TV and I think the reason that there are so many that feel this way it’s because they’re so tired of it that they just want the world to get back to what it was like before covid 19. That’s the only thing I can think of that people say that it is not real when day after day we see all the people dying and the Mobil morgues going into states where it’s so bad. The thing is if half of us wear masks and be careful and half of us do not that just will get worse and worse as it’s doing now. And it’s such a simple thing to wear a mask and say 6 feet away

  11. Madsnapper says:

Since I read so much I know what gobsmacked is and was familiar with the word but when Simon Cowell said it on American Idol my husband said what in the world does that mean. I love your title

  12. Wondering if those who say this, are “very religious people”?
    ..

Needless to say, I am not among their number…..

  13. Yes Covid is curable for 99% of the people. Eight out of 10 deaths are seniors so I believe we need to be safe. I don’t think it was a hoax but I do believe it was a set up bringing it here. However my son and daughter in law had a bubble where they felt safe not wearing masks and that was broken over a week ago. It’s real and several people got it including a senior. Masks do save lives. Also recently a lot of people who I follow on Facebook have now contacted Covid and a few are now in the hospital.

  14. nick says:

I’m especially gobsmacked to read that people still think covid is a hoax when well-known covid deniers have actually died from covid! What do they think the cause of death actually was – jabberwocky disease?

I find that if I go to the supermarket at 9 am there are no queues at all.

I went to Belfast city centre yesterday and found that distancing has been virtually abandoned. Nobody cared that they were inches away from other people. Most people were wearing masks though.

    • Jean says:

That’s too bad. Are you watching the number of cases and deaths? I assume your health care system isn’t being overwhelmed.

    • nick says:

The number of cases in NI is coming down rapidly due to the recent lockdown. Another lockdown is starting tomorrow for two weeks. Hopefully a vaccine will be rolled out in the next few weeks.
