Sea Otters Eating Sea Urchins

Commenting on yesterday’s post, tammy and Nick said they didn’t understand how otters could eat spiny sea urchins. Apparently the otters have no trouble at all. I don’t like the music on this video (I mute the sound} but it gives the best view I could find of one eating.

The author, Neil Fisher, also has some beautiful shots of Milo

    these are wonderful pictures.
and I will take the video’s word for it that they are a delicious delicacy.
I’ll leave them to the otters’ enjoyment! xo

I muted the sound on the video too. Simply amazing how they can eat those

  3. your sea urchin – is known as “kina” here, a food delicacy that many like to eat – probably because we don’t have any otters roaming about in nature…

They do seem to enjoy those sea urchins, but you might have to have them pull the spines before they would come near my mouth:)

I’ve seen videos of how they get the tasty stuff out for humans. The people doing it wear heavy gloves and they throw the spines away.

awesome photos of the otters and it looks like eating those things would hurt but they must be able to since they do it. also might hurt laying on the tummy. they are soooooooooooooo beautiful to look at. odd we need gloves but they can eat it

    • Jean says:

The outside of their tummies are well protected because their fur is so thick. I’m guessing their hands are well protected too, but I’m still surprised they can eat the spines with no problem.

    This was absolutely amazing.

I suspected they simply spit them out … but no, I looks like they’re really eating it all. Ouch! I’m blown away by this photography.
