Never a Dull Moment

Andy uses bleach as a disinfectant in our water system up on the land. He used regular Clorox for years with no problem, but now, presumably because of COVID, our store hasn’t been having it. It does have fancier versions of Clorox, splashless, scented, etc. so he’s been using the regular kind of the store brand, blissfully assuming it was just sodium hypochlorite and water. It turns out they’ve changed the ingredients and Andy didn’t notice at first because the look of the container stayed the same.

However, when he needed to open the bleach storage tank to add more bleach, he noticed the scum. Oh, oh! This is a picture of the scum after he had almost drained the tank:

He cleaned the tank out today, and after we find where to order pure bleach he will eventually clean out the rest of our water system. We are working on that.

Down here we don’t have hot water because the hot water tank in the apartment below, which we share with them, sprung a leak and won’t be replaced until tomorrow. That one is easy. All we have to do is wait.

Anyway, never a dull moment, but no big crises.

I bet you can’t wait for that water tank to be finished. Then will you still need to use this water system?

This was just the bleach storage tank. We still have a lot of water in the 10,000-gallon water tank. We just won’t add more water to it until the bleach situation is fixed. We don’t use the water for drinking (not sure why, maybe because we haven’t had it tested?), but we use it to water the fruit trees and plants in the greenhouse, and to wash dishes, flush the toilet, etc. There’s no big rush.

  2. what is with manufacturers – mixtures – be it solid or liquid.

I had an experience with a drug that I took for some years….one time I went to pick up the repeat and the outer packaging had changed but the lass said “see it’s still the name of your prescription” – I took it home, looked at the actual pill I had on hand and it was totally different look.

I started taking it and before I knew it I was having much difficulty … I was pretty sure it was that pill. So I popped to the chemist and bingo – apparently our funding body had changed suppliers and the lass said “you need to see doctor now”…so I ambled into clinic and smartly I was taken off the drug and now my files says “allergic to xyz pill”

GREAT SCOT! that was awful. and so senseless!
no communication by them at all.

    • Jean says:

It happens all the time with all sorts of products. When you read reviews on Amazon they often say they used to love the product but it has been cheapened, you can’t assume that you can trust the name.

It’s scary when it involves medicines.

I would have thought the same as Andy that the store brand would have been a fair substitute.

  4. Hootin' Anni says:

Why do they do that y’wobder. As long as they’re making their profit. But it’s upsetting.

    • Jean says:

      Let the buyer beware.

That’s an age-old saying. Sometimes it’s easier to get information about products than at other times. 🙁

Like Gilda said, “It’s always something.” Love your attitude!

  6. It’s boggles my mind how so many things are now in short supply. Bleach makes sense, given the virus, but other things don’t.

    • Jean says:

It’s complicated. The supply lines for restaurants and businesses are completely different so the stay-at-home orders have messed up a lot of things. I don’t know if that’s the explanation or if something else is going on.

  7. MadSnapper says:

ours is store brand and says 99.9 percent kills germs, the splashless doesn’t and the scented doesn’t kill germs. there is no clorox only Great Value Walmart, but i don’t see any addtives. I wonder why bleach is so hard to get. there has been none since March of last year. i wonder if a pool supply store might have addivitve for the water. that gunk is hard to get rid of

    • Jean says:

They don’t talk about additives on the label. On the Clorox bottles they say to go to smartlabel.com to see the ingredients. Most of the gazillion Clorox bleaches have additives…Great Value products aren’t listed. We spent a lot of time looking tonight and may have found something on Amazon that might work. Life gets really complicated some times. 🙂

  8. Rose says:

Well, I bet that was fun to find…NOT. I hope you can find regular Clorox soon.

Re the hidden car at Pics & Pieces. It is on the right hand side, just above the middle.

  9. Bruce Taylor says:

I marvel at your equanimity. :^))

  10. The OP Pack says:

Yes, there is always something. There are so many different bleaches out there now. Even the detergent comes with bleach in it. I saw a video where a plumber was offering tips for disinfecting the dishwasher. He said to only use regular Clorox brand bleach because all the other additives can make the washer get very “soapy” and that could cause even more problems.

Hope you can find that bleach.

We spent a lot of time looking tonight and hopefully found something acceptable on Amazon. I will let you know when it gets here and we check it out.
