Chain Saws

Sandra wanted to know how Andy clears trees from the road. Here are some pictures I took on a trip to the land four years ago.

I also found pictures of Kaitlin and Torben sawing two years ago and put them here on Flickr. They’re mostly from a distance so they’re not as informative as I would like, but then I thought of some good ones Beate took of Tim and Andy sawing when they were all clearing a defensible space last June. They are here on Flickr.

Oh my, that looks like back breaking work

  2. Ginny Hartzler says:

Yikes, he does it all by hand!!

    • Jean says:

Yes. He’s doing a bit less now. On our road he’s doing enough for the road to be passable and will have the fellow who does our road maintenance later in the year use that machinery to do the rest of the clearing. At 86 Andy’s not as young as he used to be.

  3. such dedication that Andy has/had over the years of keeping your land in good shape – especially since the fire damaged/dead trees just keep on keeping on – falling…

What a huge job of work!!!

now that is a lot of hard work, glad there was only one down, can’t imagine if there were several OR if I were the one driving on that road. that road is really narrow.. i looked at both links and your photos are awesome.. so harp and clear, and they are all hard workers. those are some pretty cool chain saws they are using.

In the beginning there would often be one after another to deal with. Bless Beate for taking those pictures of Tim and Andy… they turned out great.

  6. Myra G. says:

These are almost making my back hurt looking at them. Then again, what better exercise in that wonderful fresh air!

Looks like it was a time consuming job. I had a little Echo chainsaw about that size at work….it was my daily companion from about Nov. – through to the end of March. And sometimes in between.

  8. Bruce Taylor says:

I would think an octogenarian with a chainsaw is a definition of danger to oneself. But then, I suppose he’s had many years of experience with it and he does look quite fit.

    • Jean says:

He’s very careful, although years ago he cut a finger on one. He was going in and out of shock as I drove him down to the emergency room, about an hour away. It’s never happened again. In the pictures with Kaitlin and Torben he was telling them about safety.
