To Wear or Not To Wear

We have the tools we need to fight Delta.

We’ve spent the past year building up an arsenal of tools against the virus. None have been rendered obsolete. Vaccines fortify the body’s defenses from the inside out. Masks reduce the amount of virus we each have to tussle with, and send back out into the world. And experts last week reminded me of the importance of physical distancing, spending more time outdoors, and ventilation to reduce the virus’s spread.

Andy and I are in a low-risk area and are vaccinated but we still wear masks when we go to stores. It’s easy for us because we don’t spend much time there and it’s a habit we don’t have to think about. If another variant shows up we have a bit more protection and won’t have to start remembering again.

A friend sent me this today:

I Wear My Mask for Three Reasons

  1. HUMILITY: I don’t know if I have COVID… people can spread the disease before they have symptoms.
  2. KINDNESS: I don’t know if the person I am near has a child battling cancer, or cares for their elderly mom. While I might be fine, they might not.
  3. COMMUNITY: I want my community to thrive, businesses to stay open, employees to stay healthy. Keeping a lid on COVID helps us all.

I thought that was sweet. How do you feel about wearing masks?

I dislike wearing masks but as I live in a “High Risk” county full of non-mask-wearing-and-not-vaccinated conservatives, I will be generous and wear it whenever I am out of the house. Both my wife and I have been fully vaccinated since early March. Our county has a fully vaccinated rate of only 36 percent. Which, in our mind, is bullshit.

It’s a lot safer for us here, but Andy and I still wear our masks. I’ve heard that vaccinations are going up in hot spots…fingers crossed enough people start changing their minds.

“Fifteen more virus-related deaths and 5,597 new coronavirus cases were reported in the state since Friday.” that was on tonight’s News.
our own city’s ICU in the hospital is completely Full. all covid cases.
and there is a shortage of Nurses now.
this pandemic is far from over!
I love the last three reasons your friend sent to you. it’s wonderful.
and it’s the very Least people could and should do for others.
    we’re all in this together!

We wear them every time we leave the house, plus latex gloves! It is tragic that so many have died that didn’t need to. The virus is a common enemy and does not care about politics. I’m so glad to hear you are being careful!

  4. Ann Thompson says:

I don’t like the masks but will wear them when required to.

  5. Hootin' Anni says:

I have absolutely no problem with masks!! Even vaccinated, you can still transmit from other exposure so, why not?

  6. Myra Guca says:

Numbers are quickly escalating here, as well. No question, we’ll continue wearing our masks. Besides, they hide my wrinkles … win-win!

PS – Sharing this little list on my FB today. Thanks!

  7. MadSnapper says:

i love both of these and agree with them whole heartedly. we are masked up and vaccinated and when they call about the booster shot will be first in line.
our area of Florida the virus is rampant and our hospitals are full and are not letting visitors in starting today. we are praying about bob’s knee surgery because it will be one night in the hospital, it may be canceld by virus or hurricane. extreme heat is causing extreme thunder storms, we had a doozy storm this morning and Beau said to tell you he has not had a walk or a ball game and he has been UP 6 hours. he said dogs and cats can get the virus too

  8. I still wear a mask when I go into stores. We are vaccinated but we could still catch the variant and give it to our grandson. Praying for the day we have our freedom back.

  9. Linda Sand says:

We are vaccinated but still wearing masks. Why take chances? With our lives or those of anyone else?

  10. The OP Pack says:

We have NO problem wearing masks, We have put ours back on for a few weeks now. Our area has a moderate to slightly above moderate rate of infection. Why not just do a little thing to keep us safe and to protect others? It is the kind and humane thing to do.

    • Jean says:

We kept putting ours on even though fewer and fewer people in our stores have been wearing them. It will be interesting to see if they get more strict again.

  11. I’m fully vaccinated as well, and wear my mask as required – mainly to do with multiple passengers on public transport, I usually wipe my hands with sanitiser along the way as well and use the tracker app wherever there is the “picture thing”, if not fill in the diary that is conveniently on the app. I fill it in daily, at home – it’s not compulsory but I feel that if I was questioned on my movements, it would show me clearly if I was out or in… and I can add details like if a visitor came.

Currently (still) in New Zealand there is no community transmission that the authorities are aware of, although they do test waste water and some information surfaced in one of the regions…that maybe there was a “hidden” person. There are (incoming) people who have it in the gov’t quarantine places but they are in specialised facilities. Although on saying that a UN worker who was in Fiji was flown to Auckland for specialised medical care …

    • Jean says:

NZ has been very careful…being on an island helps a lot.

    • the virus is sneaky and it has come in stealthily – most times never found out how – but a lot of foreign fishing boats are sailing our seas and it’s a place with those companies have apparently always “changed the crews here” – of late a lot of the f/boats have found themselves in quarantine and or their change over crews arriving by air, have bought in the virus – and they are into the managed places, until they are deemed virus-free..

it’s interesting how much has been revealed during the pandemic…the details that the “little person” has no idea about.

  12. nick says:

I totally agree. The pandemic is nothing like over and it just seems sensible and responsible to continue wearing face masks and distancing for the time being. I don’t want to end up with long covid and desperately ill for months.
