Square Dancing

When we were in the car after dropping Kaitlin off to college I was sad, but Andy smiled, put his hand on my knee and said,

We no longer have to be a good example for our child. Where shall we go and what should we do?

We thought about it for a couple of years and took up square dancing.

It was fun for several years and we remember it fondly.

wow! they are really getting a good workout in that clip. 😀
the only time I have ever done any folk dancing was when living in Virginia and Northern Minnesota. I dearly loved the Virginia Reel! it was lots of fun.
and at our school dances in MN… it was always 1 Rock n Roll followed by 1 Polka and 1 Schottische. (rinse and repeat. LOL) kids today would probably be appalled or bored. but it was just a different time!

We were square dancers for awhile, too. It is a fun way to go for an evening walk. 🙂

That sounds like a lot of fun. I don’t think I could have ever gotten Wade to do something like that. I had a hard time getting him to do one dance at our wedding.

I’ve not square-danced since we had to learn it in junior high school P.E.
    Love Andy’s question!

I haven’t done that since my Jr. High days. Long, long, LONG ago.

  6. wow, I didn’t watch it all but a couple of things stand out – complex moves!

and the frilly dresses, which is my question “Jean did you go all out with the dress code? and if you did, do we have a photo?”

But I love Andys’ comment about “setting no more examples”

I wore a full skirt, but not a frilly one. Andy and I loved it when the calls were challenging. It was mental as well as physical exercise.

I did some square dancing when I was in high school and loved it. But I don’t think there was ever a time I could have gotten my husband to do it. Now ballroom dancing – that’s something he still talks about wishing we had done. I guess it is never too late:)

  8. Did a little square dancing years ago. It is fun.

What fun, and what a wonderful attitude to what could be such a sad event!

I always wanted to learn this. when i was in 3rd grade, teacher sent home a paper for parents to sign for us to sign up for square dancing classes. daddy would not sign, i had to sit it out. looks like a lot of fun, and i bet the two of you could do it even now

That’s too bad you weren’t allowed. It’s been years but we could probably remember the basic level without much problem. We were lucky enough to have a caller who also taught us Plus and some Advanced here in town We loved the challenge of it but he eventually retired and moved elsewhere.

I about laughed out loud with Andy’s comment about no longer having to be a good example to your child. I bet you two could not not be a good example even if you tried.

Or there’s always circle dancing. We have a couple of friends in England who’ve taught circle dancing for many years. They’ve built up a huge network of friends not just in the UK but all over the world.
