Dogs and Snow

Yesterday’s post reminds me of an incident over 50 years ago in Ithaca, NY. At the time we worked at Cornell and lived in an apartment in College Town, at the edge of the campus. We didn’t have a car for the first three years, so I was carrying a bag of groceries back to the apartment when a dog invited me to play. It bowed and clearly wanted a companion for playing in the snow.

I told it sorry, I had to carry the groceries home, so it grabbed the end of my scarf that was hanging down and pulled on it, essentially saying, “Oh, come on! How could you resist playing in this wonderful snow?”

I love dogs but don’t want one of my own. After all these years I still feel sad that I had to say no to that pup, and I would have too much trouble saying to any pup of mine. It wouldn’t be a good situation for either of us.

R.I.P., little pup.

Oh, if I was rich, I am afraid of how many animals I would have. Just always had a soft spot for all of them.

What a cute story. I can picture the dog pulling on your scarf to convince you to play a bit.

the dog from your past must have been one like your granddogs and my Beau. He knew how to talk to you in Pup Talk. I have never said no to a dog, that I can remember. that just jogged a memory, I have said no. My kids had a mutant mix part dachshund while they grew up. A rescue of course and he was always cold and liked to sleep with someone. I always said NO and he would head for Dan and get under his covers. I say no to all our dogs when sleeping on the bed because it keeps me awake. Max slept with us for 16 years and when he died, I said no to Bob and which ever dog it was. About strays, at one time we had 7 dogs in the yard and we lived on campus where no dogs were allowed. The president told Daddy he could not have dogs and daddy said we don’t have dogs, they are strays. the dogs were caught and corraled in a garage until someone could come and take them away to be killed. this was 1954 in KY.. the president has twin sons, my age. I told them about the dogs in the garage and they sneaked out that night and let them all out…

    Awww!
I, too, have trouble saying ‘no’ to 4-legged creatures. One day someone asked about Caraleigh’s and my relationship: “Which one of you is the alpha?”

  6. Dogs are hard to say ‘no’ to when they want to play. And they always want to play. We even had one sneak into the bedroom when we were having sex and he hung his toy ring around my foot and started pulling on it. Needless to say, he spoiled our mood because we were laughing so hard.

Memorable, and sad. But they (and you) can have the snow!
