The Lure of Smell

The Idaho Potatoes perfume reminded me of stores that lure shoppers with smells. Starbucks and bakery stores come to mind. But apparently it’s a lot more common than that. According to Harnessing The Power of Aroma: How Scent Marketing Works for Retailers,

Walk into a brightly lit Loweโ€™s store and youโ€™re hit with the scent of freshly cut wood.

You may never see a single two-by-four cut in-store, but that smell is somehow always there. Itโ€™s meant to inspire us to renovate our homes and dive into DIY.

Who would have guessed? If you’re curious, it’s a fascinating article.

Leather is another powerful smell for me. My grandfather was a carpenter with a shop out back and my mother carved leather into beautiful designs so those are both smells of my childhood.

Interesting! Now I want to go to Lowe’s and sniff…

Interesting article as I hadn’t realized so many businesses were employing this scent technique. I used the cinnamon in the oven aroma years ago when we were selling our house in a really weak market. Our real estate agent was holding an open house for other agents one day, so on a whim I thought the aroma thing might be fun to do. Probably was just a coincidence but when other homes were on the market for months we soon had a cash buyer.

The scent of freshly baked bread from the oven is my downfall!!

That wood scent now, tho, has intrigued me.

we use home depot and it does smell like sawdust and I have seen them cutting wood many times, they will take my measurments and cut to my choice. we did that a couple of times. I had not realized it smells like sawdust until now. the smell of the bakery in WM drives me nuts because they bake early and i go in at 6 and yummmm. resturants put out smells on the outside, but with all this I never thought some might put smells there on purpose. I remember the women standing at the door in Macy’s when our mall was open, they would spray perfume on your arm or wrist,

Lucky me, I have virtually no sense of smell so I wouldn’t be lured into any such shops! It’s said that prospective buyers looking round a house are always encouraged by the smell of fresh coffee. Again, I wouldn’t have noticed any such smell!

I’m not planning any DYI projects, but ADORE the aroma of freshly-cut wood. This article is fascinating, indeed. I love stuff like this!

I’ve just finished reading “The Wives of Los Alamos”. Have you read it?

I’ll have to take notice the next time I walk in a store. I don’t think I ever noticed that in HOme Depot. My biggest problem is going anywhere and running into people who have marinated themselves in their perfume
