The Reason Andy Came Home Early…

last Friday wasn’t because of the fire, it was because of the wind. He figured he would have to clear some trees off the road to drive home. Three dead ones were down on the way up to the Cochiti Mesa Road and he quickly cleared a way through them, but when he tried going down the del Norte Road to the highway he was blocked by the top section of a live tree that had snapped off. It was too big to deal with so he turned around and took the Dome Road out to the highway.

He was aware of the fire but it wasn’t an emergency. For comparison, that fire is now about 4,700 acres after three days. Our 2011 fire burned 43,000 acres in the first 13 hours. It was moving a lot faster so Andy rushed to get out. So far so good on this fire…the lower wind speeds and cooler weather have helped the firefighters a lot. Bless them for being there.

  1. I take he never leaves home without his chainsaw. Glad you both continue to be safe!

My Forest Service neighbor just came home a few days ago after being on the fire lines in New Mexico. I haven’t talked to her yet to see exactly where she was.

with the winds so high have they evacuated up on your mountain and the area? it can change in an instant. but it sounds like they’re keeping it in some kind of control. hearts are with you. XO

Yes, we haven’t been able to drive up since Friday afternoon. We don’t know when the evacuation will be over. Thanks for asking. 🙂

How I wish that fire was out! And that other fire–I just cannot imagine that. T

  5. Ann Thompson says:

That’s a big difference in how fast this fire is moving compared to the last.

  6. Hootin Anni says:

Less wind and smaller burn area sounds promising. Your Andy is a wise man.

glad to hear a little good news, even that is scary to me… if a tree was down in from of me, I would be stuck for sure… chain saws are beyond my skill set. thanks for letting us know it has slowed down, I fear for your beautiful mountain top home

  8. Yes, that’s a marked difference!
So, is the Dome Road that shown in gold? I’m so confused! This map reminds me how, years later, I’d get annoyed when people would say: “Oh, ____? Yes, I’ve been through there.” (*grin*)

  9. oh no…fire in any form, that sets a pace…not good – but I think the next post has more “bad news”
