Flash Floods and Culverts

Andy has been getting flash flood alerts on his cellphone…that’s often an aftermath of wildfires. Here are pictures of one in del Norte Canyon that messed up our road after the 2011 fire:

So far our recent rains were enough to put water in the stream, but not nearly enough to cause problems:

And even if we had a lot more rain, the road is much better protected now because then it had only a 3-foot culvert and when we repaired the road we added the 4-foot one shown in these pictures.

As you can see, that part of the road is a lot safer now than it was then.

There are a lot more pictures here in Flickr.

The roads need work but it’s been too dry the past couple of years. Andy’s hoping the rain will do more good than harm.

  2. Hooting Anni says:

Hope the road continues to be safe and not flooded!

  3. MadSnapper says:

that is a LOT of MUD. wow! and scary looking to me.. good idea to put in the larger culvert.. should make a big difference.

  4. I wouldn’t want to try and traverse that bend under water. Good job, y’all!

such beautiful pictures showing a potentially dangerous situation!
the cycles of nature. truly fascinating. xo

  6. Mike says:

That new culvert should handle a LOT more flow. Of course, as shown with the recent floods in Yellowstone, exceptionally heavy prolonged rains could do a lot of damage.

It’s been warm and dry here. We were concerned that we might be heading into a very hot period like we’ve had in some other years, but we’ve had a break of a couple of cooler days and the long-term forecast has moderated.

    • Jean says:

That flooding in Yellowstone is impressive. I’m glad your weather forecast is promising about the heat… I wilt when it gets too hot.

  7. I never would have guessed flash floods come after forest fires. What next? Locust?

  8. Ann Thompson says:

Wow, that did make a mess back in 2011. Hope you don’t get a repeat of that

  9. Rose says:

I had not thought about what a wildfire does to the ground.
