The trouble is intense fires not only burn the vegetation, they bake the soil so water can’t soak in. It all flows downstream.

There are more, and higher resolution, pictures here on Flickr.

Oh my goodness! That must have been some powerful rain!

    • Jean says:

The same thing is happening now in other parts of the burn scar from the recent fires. Probably not as bad but enough to close some roads.

  2. Rose says:

That is not good…I always think how good and bad things like fire and water can be.

  3. Ann Thompson says:

These are proof of just how powerful the elements can be.

    • Jean says:

Yes, as Calvin’s Hobbes once said, we humans think we’re such big screaming deals. Sometimes we get lessons in humiility.

  4. MadSnapper says:

I have seen what fire and floods after can do each year when CA burns and floods. these are the first fire/flood photos I have seen that were not on the TV screen. the explanation makes sense, I had not thought about the baked soil

    • Jean says:

Apparently if the forests weren’t so overgrown the fires wouldn’t be so intense and that wouldn’t happen. Fire is a natural part of the ecosystem here.

  5. I’ve always associated these arroyos with vacant land in the southern part of the state. Wow. Every day’s a school day.
