Loving Winter

In a comment to yesterday’s post Myra said she loves short, gray days. I enjoy them too, but in fairness that’s because our days aren’t as short here as they are up north, and they’re a nice contrast to all the sunny days we get. But we lived in Ithaca for over 8 years when we were first married, and winter lasted about seven months and during that time we would get only about six sunny days. We lived on the edge of the Cornell campus and walked the half mile to and from work. The wind chill was impressive at times, but we bundled up and I still preferred that to the hot, humid summers. (I wouldn’t like to do that now!)

Like Catalyst I have a strong hermit gene and winter is great time for contemplation. I realize it makes a big difference being retired and usually not having to go out when the snow is bad.

Anyway, no desire to go to Florida, but I’m glad Sandra is happy there.

Stay safe and warm, everyone in the Northern Hemisphere. And hurray for air conditioners for Catherine down in New Zealand.

I do not like gray days, never have. as a child I enjoyed the snow, but would not now. gray days drain my energy and we just had FOUR in a row with zero sun. the sun came back yesterday and i was instantly happier. Myra keeps her blinds and curtain closed, I open mine when I get up and close when dark falls. wide open space is my thing and why we have this house, for the middle of the house is one big room, Myra loves small cozy rooms with walls. I think it is amazing that we have close friends in blogland that we love and admire and yet are the opposite of what we are. Imagine trying to LIVE with someone that is the opposite.. would we have half rooms open and have closed??

We have four huge windows in our living room looking out over a nature preserve. We have no curtains on those windows so are much impacted by what the weather is doing. We had a lot of rain recently that made it hard to be cheerful. Now, the sun is very bright which, at this time of year, means it is very cold. The snow is beautiful but I’m so glad to be retired thus not having to go out in it.

    Yep, like Sandra…gimme warm days.

  5. air-conditioners in private homes is a “new invention” – before that you put up with the hot room or you might have a noisy upright fan – but even that wasn’t common. I grew up with windows wide open in the hope of cool air!

I’ve only the aircon/heatpump reverse thing for less than 2 years – and it doesn’t reach all the rooms. The healthy homes guidelines for rental homes is living room only!

A privately owned home could put in more – there’s a house on my walk where they recently in winter installed one that obviously feeds their bedrooms. And the other morning, very early I noted it was on (aircon I guess) overnight.

Many older homes including this one have no (thermal stuff) in the walls & proper double glazed windows whereas new builds it’s required…so only a certain amount of heat/cooling really makes a difference.

Insulation is so important. Our apartment is better now that they replaced the windows, but the walls could still use a lot more insulation.

Endless gray days get me longing for sunshine. Although I dislike the cold and snow I don’t think I would like to live full time in Florida. It would be nice in winter though.
