Drifting Snow

Andy decided not to try go up to the land yesterday. He figured the wind would have created enough drifts to keep him out. He made the right choice, the Valles Caldera National Preserve was closed “due to winds continuing to drift the snow back across the entrance road.” I wrote to a neighbor up there in the afternoon to try to find out if the roads would be passable today, and she said the drifts had been huge and it took a long time to dig through them, but the roads should be all right today if we didn’t get much new snow (or too much wind).

The National Weather Service is predicting a few inches of snow and not much wind, so we will have to see if they’re right. (Click on the picture for higher resolution.)

I miss Dark Sky for its easy-to-read format, but Apple bought it out and discontinued it the first of the year. They say their new app is even better, but it doesn’t give the forecast for our land, which Dark Sky did, and the National Weather Service lets me pick our location on their map. Life goes on and we adjust.

The weather apps I’ve had are never very accurate. They don’t give the exact location I’m at. It always takes the closest larger town about 20 miles away and it can have a huge difference.

we are good with the apps because we are 2 miles from the airport where the weather thingy is located for our area. the app on iPhone does a great job, mine is blue on mine not white. easier to read than this one. I don’t know if the phone is updating so it might be the old one. I like it better for weather than the one on my samsung

For some reason the Apple app doesn’t do as well here even though we’re not far from the airport. The Weather Channel does better, but I don’t like the format as well.

  3. I’ve the default weather app on my Google Pixel, but prefer that of WSFA, our local television station. During last week’s storms (3 of their 4) meteorologists were live on-air 24/7.

As soon as I find something I love, and start using it, they CHANGE it!! Many times, they will say the new product is better, but it rarely is. In fact, it is usually worse in order for them to save money.

I use the national Weather Service app, too. They give reports from the nearest small airport when I enter our zip code. When the weather is particularly threatening, we zoom in on the radar maps on our laptops to see what is headed at us. We live on the western edge of a major city where the storms tend to bear off to go north or south around our heat shield. I appreciate that.
