Update and Andy’s Eyes

When I had trouble reaching the MVD by phone Tuesday I went to their website and asked what to do about the title and registration. They hadn’t answered by Wednesday afternoon, so that’s when I tried phoning again. This morning I received this email:

I show that both names are listed on the title and registration with an or between the names. Not sure on the paperwork you received with just your name. Our system is correct, so you may get additional paperwork in the mail.

Thank you.

So the change has been made correctly, we just have to wait to receive our copy of the paper work. On the whole we’ve been impressed by the MVD, and we don’t take that for granted. In this day and age we’re grateful every time a system works well and when people are friendly and helpful.

Okay, so about Andy’s eyes. Several years ago a routine exam showed wet macular degeneration in both eyes, so we started the trips to Santa Fe for shots to keep it from getting worse. Santa Fe is a little less than an hour away, and the visits usually take about two hours, most of it spent waiting. Occasionally it will stretch to three hours, and very rarely he will be out in an hour. Wednesday it was a three-hour one, and they were scheduled to treat his right eye but decided the left one needed more attention so they treated that one and rescheduled the right eye for March 20.

So, how many trips do we make? In the beginning we were going twice a month, once for each eye. We can’t remember when that started, but gradually they extended the time between treatments so we were going three times a year for each eye. We had appointments March and April, July and August, and November and December. Now we’re guessing we can keep going every four months for the right eye but may need to go every two months for the left one. We are not complaining. We’re grateful that they have been saving his eyesight. And we’re grateful for calendars to keep everything straight for us.

(That said, we’re hoping we don’t have too many three-hour visits. I’m still working on my patience for those!)

I am so glad they have the shots that keep his eyesight working. to me they are miracle shots. to me sight is the most important of all our senses. my mother lost her sight to diabetes and the last 5 years of her life, before she died at 63, were so horrible for her. she was bed/wheel chair ridden and could not see. she listened to TV and to audible books. back then the books were on a walkman and hard to come by
you would need more than patience if BOB had to wait 3 hours. at 1 hour he would get up and walk out. this is the truth. the man hates waiting. he once pulled his iv out and got up to walk out because they were making him wait for the doctor to sign off, even though he had said he could go home.

Yes, those shots are miracles! It would have been horrible if Andy was still hale and hearty but couldn’t drive up to the land.

Thanks for the update on Andy! I was afraid his might be Thyroid Eye disease. From my understanding (that) treatment is horrific and oftentimes not covered by insurance.
I used to dread every Sunday morning’s trip to Santa Fe for church. At least we got to go out to Furr’s Cafeteria after for a nice lunch. Do y’all make an outing of your own after these obligations?

    • Jean says:

No. We have been scheduling the appointments for around 10 so if we got out by noon he could drive up to the land after we got home. Now the no longer have morning appointments.

  3. That is wonderful that the shots are working.

I have the dry kind, but it can turn into wet at any time. I’m so sorry this happened! So will these shots keep it stabilized for good?

    • Jean says:

Every four months for each eye stabilized them since before the pandemic. Now apparently the left one is getting worse. Fingers crossed they can stop the changes. I’m so sorry that you have MD too.

  5. Linda Sand says:

I make my medical appointments for 1:00 pm. That’s right after lunch so I am first in line. I rarely have to wait and often get called back early to be ready when the doctor is.

    • Jean says:

Fingers crossed that helps! We’ve been making the appointments for around 10 in the morning so if Andy were out by noon he could drive up to the land. Now they will no longer make morning appointments so the next two are at 12:50 and 1. We’ll see if that shortens the waiting time.

A book. Take a book to pass the time. Judy’s daughter has severe glaucoma and has had numerous eye surgeries and shots and what-all. We ache for her as she is an extremely talented artist.

I bring my iPad, things to write, audio books, etc. The trouble is I don’t like to sit, so stand up to write and use the computer when I’m at home.

  7. Well at least those shots have been helping. My last visit to my eye surgeon was 4 hours, I about walked out. Maybe next time.

  8. ok, I expecting to read “not good” so good to hear there is treatment

  9. Ann Thompson says:

Glad to hear that the shots help but sorry to hear that his one eye has gotten worse. I always hate waiting at a doctors office
