on the way home Wednesday evening.
How cool was that?

We decided to go up to the land for a picnic supper Wednesday, even though it was overcast. Shortly after we got there the sun came out and everything was bathed in late afternoon golden light.
We even saw a rainbow.

In her comment to yesterday’s post, Sandra/Mad Snapper said:
I think this is photoshopped or AI generated. I could cut him out and put him anywhere. it is to planned and the edges of the bear are blurred.
I’m afraid Sandra is right. Around here people do find bears on their decks, but the bears are looking for food, not taking time to enjoy the view.
Sigh. It was such a great idea and picture. I enjoyed believing it. 🙁

As luck would have it, Andy had to go shopping yesterday. Because he was a veteran (Korean War) he got 10% off his total bill. That was a nice surprise.
When Andy was a sophomore in college his father told him he was bound to be drafted, but if Andy volunteered for the draft he could choose when to go . Andy should go between his sophomore and junior years…that would mess up his life the least. So Andy did, and he served for two years. Fortunately he didn’t have to fight or even go overseas, but it was still the worst two years of his life. And as it turned out, his father had been wrong. The war ended. If Andy had stayed in college he wouldn’t have had to do it.

Usually our parking lot is more empty on weekends, but not yesterday.
When Andy came home he noticed some activity in the basketball court and picnic area:
The guys played soccer until their families arrived. Then everyone had cake, presumably to celebrate a birthday.
We thought a lot of the cars would leave when the party was over, but when a couple of spots opened up they filled up again. I checked around midnight and the cars were still there. It’s a mystery. (So much for news here!)

Thursday Beau mentioned how much plants had grown with just a little rain. It reminded me of 2022. Here are a couple of pictures taken in May after the fire:
And here is what that area looked like in August:
Rain does make a difference.

Andy and I still remember a program we saw on TV about 50 years ago. It was about a fellow who managed a big farm when he was younger. Then as he got older his growing space was reduced to a garden. By the time of the program he was still growing things, but in a window box. I thought of that Wednesday when Andy brought home this picture of the nasturtiums taking over the corn space in the greenhouse. Andy will plant only a few new tomato plants this year. The greenhouse now makes a fine window box, and we still love it.

It warmed my heart yesterday to read about this small taco restaurant that won a Michelin star:
Taquería El Califa de León
Cuisine: MexicanThere is a reason why El Califa de León has endured for more than half a century. This taqueria may be bare bones with just enough room for a handful of diners to stand at the counter but its creation, the Gaonera taco, is exceptional. Thinly sliced beef filet is expertly cooked to order, seasoned with only salt and a squeeze of lime. At the same time, a second cook prepares the excellent corn tortillas alongside. The resulting combination is elemental and pure. Other options are few but excellent, and include bistec (beef steak), chuleta (pork chop), and costilla (beef rib). With meat and tortillas of this caliber, the duo of house-made salsas is hardly even necessary.

More isn’t always better. Hurray for Michelin!
