Dishwashers

Do you have/use a dishwasher? We’ve had one for over 40 years but use it just for storage. With only the two of us and simple meals, it’s easier to wash our dishes by hand.

What about you?

  1. I’ve never personally owned a (mechanical) dishwasher, although I have loaded/unloaded other peoples…

I personally think for one person it would be more trouble than it’s worth. And they do take up precious space.

There’s only two of us and we don’t cook much but we use our dishwasher. We may only run it a couple times a week but it gets the dishes really clean with no effort on our part besides loading and emptying it. That means we do own more dishes than we would if we were hand washing them after every meal but we have enough cupboard space for them so that’s OK. When we were RVing, though, we didn’t have a dishwasher nor so many dishes so hand washing was the thing. That’s when we learned blue Dawn dishwashing liquid is wonderful! It will even wash dirty dishes clean using cold water! Amazing stuff we still use to wash the occasional pan we don’t think the dishwasher can handle.

Thanks for telling me about Dawn — I’ve heard of it and will probably switch. We don’t have that much cupboard space, so using the dishwasher for storage is more convenient for us.

We have a dishwasher. Mom actually prefers to wash the dishes herself, but our Dad uses a lot of glasses. Mom likes the way the dishwasher cleans the glasses so she uses ours a couple of times a week.

We like the dishwasher because when the door is open, it is low enough that we can do our own dish washing:) Maybe that is TMI.

    We’re on our second machine.

After our girls — who had dish washing as part of their chores — left home in the mid 90s, I installed a dishwasher. It broke down about 10 years ago, but I figured out it was a pump impeller that had failed and was able to repair the machine. Eventually, it got to the point where replacement parts weren’t available any where on line. All I needed was to replace the baskets which had rusted away to the point that part of the dish racks couldn’t be used any more. It was also getting louder and louder when in use and was getting on its last legs. So, last year, I replaced it. It’s so quiet that you can hardly tell it’s running — except for the loud gurgling it makes when it discharges water into the sink drain. I need to fix that.

    • Jean says:

That’s great that it doesn’t make much noise. The noise was one reason I didn’t like using ours.

It’s always frustrating when an appliance can’t be repaired because of lack of parts. ๐Ÿ™

You guys are all pioneers compared to us! I cook a lot, so a dishwasher makes life very much easier. I wouldn’t want to be without it!

like you I have used mine wherever I’ve lived for the last 40 years as a storage unit! I keep my refrigerator dishes in mine right now.
the only time I actually used one when Bob was alive was if I cooked a large meal for an ‘occasion’ with lots of people and we were entertaining. it was really nice then. but those days are over.
like Linda says… I LOVE blue dawn liquid. and they help wildlife in oil spills.
for one person I think a dishwasher might be a waste. I just wash my dishes as soon as I’m through eating. kind of a ritual now. I’ve always rather liked doing it. ๐Ÿ™‚

I’ve been using Palmolive for years, it and Ivory used to get the best reviews, but it’s time to switch to Dawn.

  7. Ann Thompson says:

We had a dishwasher when I was growing up but never had one after I left my dads house. Unless of course you count the years when my daughter was in charge of washing dishes. There are times when I wish I had one but I can live without it and with it just being me it would hardly be worth it.

    • Jean says:

Yes, they make more sense for larger families or for people who cook a lot and/or have a lot of company.

  8. I’ve had a dishwasher for the past 18 years. I live alone and only run it once a week…it’s mostly full of cups, silverware, plates and cereal bowls and one-time use recycling that has to be clean before it goes into the recycling bins.

    • Cindi says:

I used to want a dishwasher in the worst way.
I donโ€™t enjoy washing my dishes and the thought of just sticking them into a washer and having them come out sparkly clean and sanitized sounds like joy to me.
But… I have a tiny kitchen space and the cost and inconvenience of installation rules one out for me.
So I hand wash mine. My dish soap has to be Dawn! Anything else to me is inferior and more expensive because I end up using twice as much of something else.
Also, itโ€™s a good handy soap for grimy little dogs! Lol!
And I ALWAYS air dry. (It annoys me to have them sitting in the drying rack though) but drying with a towel isnโ€™t as sanitary.
Jeez, reading this over this comment, maybe Iโ€™m a bit OCD?
      Sigh… wish I had a dishwasher!
      LOLOLOL

    • Jean says:

Our kitchen is small and we don’t have a lot of cupboard space for spare dishes, etc. That makes a big difference. Like Cindi I air dry my dishes.

  9. Linda says:

We were introduced to Dawn dishwashing liquid when we were preparing to move into an RV. For that place it has to be the blue version of Dawn because you do not want to put anything antibacterial into an RV’s holding tank. You want everything in there to break down to facilitate dumping the tank. Since using too much antibacterial stuff creates an environment that encourages superbugs we continue to use blue Dawn.

    • Jean says:

We’ve been using Palmolive for years, and it’s not antibacterial either and is phosphate free. After reading the comments, I will try Dawn to see if I notice any difference. This article says Dawn is its top pick, but thinks Palmolive is good too.
