What On Earth Is That?

The Mac Mini I’ve been using for the past 3 1/2 years has been acting up from time to time lately, and mostly rebooting it when things get weird has worked. But when I restarted the machine and couldn’t log on because the keyboard didn’t work, it made me nervous. I could restart it again with the mouse, but what if neither worked?

I decided to be prudent and buy a new machine, the 2018 Mac Mini. I did the research to figure out which configuration made the most sense for me, and I figured out and ordered the new adapters I would need (yes, they keep changing things). The new Mac Mini came yesterday, so I’m now downloading the upgraded operating system and am installing the programs I need.

One of the programs is the Firefox browser, which is more complicated than it used to be. Somehow if I typed in the right letters and pushed the right buttons, I could synch the bookmarks and passwords I was using on my old machine. So I was stumbling around when suddenly this popped up on my screen:

Say what?!! I stared at it for a bit trying to figure out what I was supposed to do, then I realized I had been using DuckDuckGo as my search engine on the old machine, and sure enough, it was now my default here.

And all my old bookmarks and saved passwords are now magically on this machine. I’m writing this post on the new machine, so I’m off to a good start.

That’s enough for one day — I’ll leave the machine on to finish the download of the new operating system, it needs about another hour, then after I install it I’ll call it quits until tomorrow.

Life is one adventure after another. Have you had any lately?

I love it when things go right with a new computer…but sure hate it when the one I am using starts messing up.

  2. I don’t know that I would have been able to figure that out. I’m so dumb when it comes to computers, I just want to turn the darn thing on and hopes it works, and if it doesn’t, I turn it off and hope for the best! 🙂

As far as any recent adventures – My commute to work every day is an adventure! 🙂

  3. yes well, there have been a few “unwanted” adventures here lately…but none have been about technology (thank goodness, touch wood and bless the blessed stone etc)

I used to like the search engine with the dog, something to do with Jeeves…long ago stuff.

It makes me sad that you have to curtail your adventuring out because of health problems, but I’m so glad you still have your art.

It seems I am constantly trying to get used to one tech marvel after another! Don’t envy you having to do this, but it seems you are mastering it. I’ve been working on learning all of the various miracles the iphone can perform lately. I’ve had the phone for three months, and can’t say I know anything beyond the rudimentary maneuvers. Oh, well…

Techy issues always make me nervous. I know enough to run the things I use but when it comes to issues I never quite know what to do.
Iwould be totally lost on a mac

Technology seems to get more and more complicated. Or is that just me feeling intimidated? Best of luck getting your new pc fully functional.

I agree with Nick! it seems now that any update they do brings another set of problems. part of me wants to say… “just leave it/ME alone already!”
but then I’m reminded “it’s for ‘security’ purposes.” do I believe that?
I don’t really know what to believe anymore about anything! 🙂

For a long time we refused to update on our desktop computer (now ten years old) but then Firefox said it would no longer work unless we stepped a bit further into the modern world. Apple let us update some, but the computer is too old for the latest bells and whistles, thank goodness. It’s good enough for Firefox, for a while at least.

Dave and I use the Notes app to share our grocery list. The most recent iOS update broke our ability to sync it. We can do nothing except wait for the next iOS fix. For years my least favorite phrase has been “new, improved” and once again it has proven to be wrong.

    • Jean says:

I think sometimes improvements slip in. 😀 I did appreciate being able to have all my contacts, bookmarks, and saved login passwords come over. That saved me a lot of time. But I wouldn’t be surprised if the reason I needed the new computer was because of the switch to the new 64-bit operating system.

I think you have the right attitude — more “improvements” will come soon enough and hopefully they will fix your problem.

I just had a nuclear stress test, as ordered by my cardiologist. Apparently I was feeling stress about the test because my first blood pressure reading was a bit high. (White Coat Hypertension?) After that the test went fine and I didn’t even get the 3 minutes or so of feeling crummy that the nurse/tech had told me I’d get. I jokingly told him he must have injected the wrong juice.

    • Jean says:

I’m glad your test went fine — that’s great news. I’m well aware that computer problems are nothing to stress about — they have nothing to do with our health and happiness (unless we let them).
