Windy, Dusty, Noisy

That was going to be what this post was about. Yesterday the state was having a high wind warning, including the possibility of dust storms that would make driving hazardous. The wind would also make fighting wildfires more difficult.

We did have high winds down here so I took a couple of videos from our porch. I tried putting them on YouTube, but they’ve changed things and it didn’t the work the way I wanted it to. So click on the pictures if you want to see and hear a bit of animation.

I took the videos about 3:30 PM and I could smell dust so I assumed that was what was causing the haze. Things changed a couple of hours later.

There’s a new fire a few miles away from our place up in the mountains. Andy made it home and our neighbors have evacuated safely but we will have to see if the fire hits us. It will depend mainly on the wind. The view from the porch this afternoon was clear this afternoon, which we took as a good sign, and Beate sent us a link to a site where we can monitor the growth of the fire. More about that tomorrow.

I was talking to my neighbor, a paramedic fire chief, this afternoon and he said his wife who works for the Forest Service here had just returned a couple of days ago from New Mexico where she’d been on or near the fire lines. They both go to help out on fire crews across the country every summer.

Oh my, I’m so sorry. I hope you have some kind of early warning system. Keep us posted.

Down here the government emailed and phoned to say don’t report the fire bcause they already knew about it. Andy always watches for smoke and comes home when he sees there is a fire. Some of our neighbors there sent emails to our email group telling them about it.

Glad to hear Andy got home safely.

  4. oh fingers crossed on fire in and near your cabin acreage ….

here if it’s windy – usually also stormy – and it can whip around the houses as if it’s an open pathway – the last time there was such a stormy my bins fell over even though in a way at the time they were protected between the overgrown trees and my unit – a tiny “tunnel” was all the wind had but “it swooped down and around”

our driveway always seems to attract branches and rubbish – as it did that time, I didn’t even recognize the branch with the leaves…came from some place else in the street.

funny weather today – stormy and then brilliant sunshine – I realised after my zoom class that there was nice gaps so when it was raining one time, I got ready to go for a walk and then went in the nice gap – and didn’t go far but didn’t end up getting soaked

Okay…I will try not using the apostrophe then. Wow, I have been watching your area (and now Colorado) with all the fires!! I sure hope the wind keeps your area from harm’s way.

  7. Rose says:

I had seen your video earlier…before I went to bed. That wind is sure strong. I do hope the fire does not reach your place.

I just love your town. even with the drought and the fires.
it must touch a part of my heart that I had living in Colorado all those years ago. one never loses it.
I hope Tim and Beate’s property and all your neighbors on the mount are safe.
waiting and watching with you. a time when I appreciate modern technology!

One of our neighbors has a camcorder watching his house…he can get pictures from it remotely. A cool thing to have in times like these.

  9. Fingers crosses for you and your neighbors in harm’s way of the fires.

  10. Thank goodness Andy and the others elected to get out! Those firefighters are certainly heroes. I’d be running away and here, they’re headed straight towards the danger. Watching ….

  11. I pray that things are safe by you now.
